I have in mind to buy a block of land, put a cabin or a shipping container home (will consider other options, if I like the idea), and rent out the resulting residence. I’m talking layout similar to a studio or maybe one bedroom apartment, but (obviously) as a stand alone residence. The prices for cabins or shipping container homes are a bit steeper than I consider useful. A fitted out shipping container on stumps with a small porch should not be $60,000+. Prices like these are beyond a joke. I can probably design and build one myself for cheaper than that, and it would certainly be more solid than most what I see advertised on the net.
You need council approval for both cabins and shipping containers which can be difficult. A lot of councils don’t like shipping containers and the remaining don’t let them be visible from street view. The main issues are not many tenants would want to stay in a shipping container or the quality of tenant you would attract.
For that effort you might as well get a regional property. Safer option and probably lower vacancy and better return.
