I know Abbott says he wont change negative gearing as it currently operates……but if we aren’t to trust him can I ask some advice from older wiser people on the forum.

If the ATO changed negative gearing would it be retroactive or would it just apply to new purchases?

What happened in the 80’s when they implemented this?

The sh^t hit the fan. That’s what. Investors started selling. Prices dipped and rents soared.

I don’t see that happening again.

If you buy well you shouldn’t be negatively geared for more than a few years. I don’t like negative gearing myself and only once bought a negatively geared property.

but do you know if it was retroactive across all properties or only new purchases (obviously the govt doesn’t have to follow the same route but might give guidance).

Well it seems that is would be across the board, a change in reform would affect everything including old and new. (if it ever happened)
