I’ve always wondered, what do they generally do. What are the activities or medium-large property development corporations? What kind of people do they employ?
Just some background. I’m 20, have a bachelor of architecture, studying construction part-time (to learn the actual building side of things, to earn more at a young[er] age, and therefore be able to invest more). The dream is to become a developer. Although I’ve seen / heard of firms and individuals from an architecture or construction background fund their own small developments, how does one go beyond that and exclusively become a developer. I’m talking people like (and excuse me if some of these examples are sort of cliche, or a little out there):
– Young Woo of Youngwoo & Associates (NYC developer, architectural graduate)
– Iwan Sunito and Paul Sathio of Crown Group (SYD developers, former architect and engineer respectively)
– Zach Vella & Justin Ehrlich of VE Equities (NYC developers, studied business together in college – they seemed to have skipped the whole background in some relevant industry as is common with most other developers mentioned. Although I did read somewhere that Zach used to at some stage work on-site and therefore had some practical education) — and yes, I do watch MDLNY (Million Dollar Listing NY).Now for some huge names…
– Henry Pollack (co-founder of Mirvac, initially an architect)
– Harry Triguboff of Meriton – I understand they also design and construct their own projects in-house (right?)
– TF Cornerstone (NYC developers, don’t know much about them). What all these people have in common though is they are essentially developers only, their firms don’t offer design, architectural or building services. Hence back to my earlier question, how does come to do that exclusively? And more importantly, when one reaches this stage, what are their day to day activities or operations (generally speaking)?

Apologies for the long post but there are many brilliant and experienced people on here. Some insight into the field would be greatly appreciated…particularly since I don’t really know much at this stage.
