Here's an article about the development of a method to convert coal to heat without burning the coal. Researchers at Ohio State University say they use a process which controls the chemical reaction, allowing them to contain 99% of the carbon dioxide emissions within their reactor. The researchers apparently expect big things from the technology which they call "coal-direct chemical looping".
