    Hi,

I am looking to get into the renovation game some time in the future. For now, I just want to obtain some information so that I am prepared when I have acquired enough capital to take on a project. Does anybody know any good books/websites that will provide me with some valuable information? I'm not really interested in forking out a few thousand dollars on a seminar. Also, everybody says it is vital to have a mentor when starting out in property investment, but where would Somebody find one?!

    Thanks in advance, Jack

Dolf De Roos has a book called 101 Ways Massively Increase the Value of Your Real Estate

It doesn't specifically teach you how to carry out renos but it provides a comprehensive list of ideas for improving value to a property.

Youtube has heaps of reno videos that may come in handy.

    Cheers

Youtube is great for specific reno videos but always leave the complex work to the professionals. It may cost you more to incorrectly do it yourself and then try and pay someone to fix your work (this has happened to a 'friend' of mine).

Obviously some common sense needs to apply here. I wouldn’t encourage someone to build a granny flat while having a YouTube vid playing in the back ground.

For simple, basic DIY stuff it’s fantastic.

Jane Slack-Smith has written an excellent book on renovating. I have not read it myself yet but will be soon.

I am in the renovation game myself and know Jane quite well. She is an excellent source of knowledge with a vast background in renovating, finance and most things property.

I'd suggest this as a great one to get started on. Its called 'Your Property Success with Renovation'

Also, I have written lots of articles and blogs which you can find on my website (www.hotspaceconsultants.com). Keep visiting this forum too and checking in what other people are asking/talking about. A great way to learn lots of random things!

    Good luck.

I found API's Renovation guide booklet quite interesting. Doesn't tell you how to do things as such but more what sort of renovations add the most value to a property and which ones you probably won't make your money back on. It's on http://www.businessmall.com.au. Few other good books on there too.

Agree with the You tube comments! I learnt how to lay carpet, install ceilings and how to plaster from youtube. And you wouldn't even know it was a DIY job ;)

Also the Bunnings and Mitre 10 sites are really handy! They have some really good step by step instruction manuals and video's on how to do most DIY jobs.

    Have Fun!

    Cheers,
