I am a resident of Killeen, Texas. I am planning to enter the real estate market…but very unclear about the entire process. I had visited a couple of online property management firms serving my area ( the one I remember was Tropicana Realty). I wanted to ask which one is better- consult these professionals or do it on my own?

Property is a physical asset. Meet and greet a few realtors, talk to them (they don't all bite). Find out what they can do for you, what services that they provide, what fees and charges you will have to pay, when will they send you the rent etc.

Do the same for the on-line agencies and see what the differences are.

I would suggest that if you are fresher never step in alone in the real estate market. there are many risks involved that you wont be able to figure out without the help of a real estate agent. I don't know about Tropicana but ya you will surely get many options out there. You can also try the BUY SWAP SELL thing. its really profitable. firms like Hunter rentals can guide you. I have heard a lot about them.

I would first familiarize myself with the process regardless of realtors – read a bit about the property purchase and rental process in Texas, there must be a few governmental and organizational (meaning non-profit) websites out there – then you'll be able to confirm your knowledge with the realtors to "test" them, and also not appear out of your depth. If you're planning to obtain finance, do some reading about financing laws and regulations, procedures and risks, as well. Finally, familiarize yourself with profitable areas and types of popular real-estate investments in your area.

the above should give you enough of an initial background to start talking to realtors and let them know you're not clueless.

welcome aboard, it's a great and enjoyable sector to be active in :)
