All Topics / Help Needed! / Removing strong smell from house
Hey all, hope your well!
The IP i recently purchased has some horrible smells. Animals living inside, so smells of urine, and feces, damp smells, etc.
There is nothing wrong structurally. What would be the best way to remove these smells?
I’m thinking completely replacing all carpets and repainting walls (needed to be done regardless). Would this be enough? Any hints and tips on the best solution?
Regards
NHGRemove remove carpet / under lay air the house out before laying the new carpet
get rid of anything that absorbs the odours, replace underlay and carpet as burner said, paint walls, maybe even pressure wash where u can, let it dry and air out, inspect underneath the house(if possible) for any rot or anything, do the same in the roof, could be mice or rats living in there too..
Definitely lay underlay under the carpet. We renovated a similar house, and the smell of urine went through the floor boards – terrible!
For cigarette and urine smells .. wash the walls down with a white vinegar and then steam clean the carpets.

These recipes work on concrete and timber as well. If your using it on timber floors test in a small area (wardrobe) first if your timber floors are aesthetic.

All of the above, but most importantly fresh air flowing through the house helps a lot. I got a deceased estate that hadn't been cleaned for at least 30 years, and was empty for 2 years before settlement day, windows and doors were opened non stop for over a month before people didn't complain when walking in,lots of cleaning and fresh air did the trick. Good luck in getting rid of your smells NHG.
I'd be scrubbing the floorboards as well, with the magic baking soda, vinegar water mix. Cleans everything and if you want a nice smell, add a cup full of fragrance to the water.

The BSod, vinegar solution will neutralise the smell first. It’s better to complete the cleaning process without deodorisers as they simply mask any residual smells that might be there fooling you into thinking you’ve solved the problem.
Clean first then assess how successful you’ve been. Clean again if necessary. Once you’ve got the odour problem licked then apply a pleasing odour like citrus, sandlewood or whatever takes your fancy.

Hmm…
Sounds long and painful :p
Thanks for the advice everyone, lots of useful information. Never thought of rats and mice, this will be fun haha.
Hi NHG,
We had a similar issue with our tenants having a small zoo in a new IP we purchased in a remote town, when they moved we took the opportunity to paint the inside of the house, we drove out to take a look at the property and the painter had kindly removed the carpet for us. The ply flooring was so badly stained that we actually got him to roller paint the whole floor to seal the in smell.
Ahh good memories..
