ive just been advised by a family member that as i am on a small block (600sqm) that it might be worth shifting (rellocating) the original weatherboard house to the back of the property, subdividing, then building a new unit at the front.

the house itself is on an angle on the block, it is a perfect rectangle. weatherboard and no more than 9 squares, my aim may be to make it straight and shift it about 20 meters back..

is this possible, and who is the best person to speak to about doing so?

    cheers

Hi, My mother moved a house from the very rear of a block where you stepped out the back door and fell over the back fence :(

There are specialist house movers around that often buy and sell relocatable houses and they can be contracted to move your house for you. As with everything, get a few quotes, check out their work and talk with some previous clients to get feedback.

In my Mum's case she was able to maximise the space of the lot, add value to the property and realise a considerable capital gain. And the property sold to the first couple to view it.

I suggest you start with google and maybe talk with local hardware stores and such, though i suppose you may not get much info if your local H/W is large, green and starts with B which are a little more like hardware supermarkets.

    Good luck

Great thanks, do you roughly know prices – just before i call around.

Might start with google, and ill take your advice on not going to the store that rhymes with runnings and starts with B

    Anyone else ?

First I'd go to council and see whether the block would be sub dividable. Then at least you know whether it's worthwhile following up.

I disagree about the matter of the big green store being unhelpful on these matters.  This store specifically employees tradies, and tradies know other tradies.  I am in that store every weekend with a different "hi, I need to such and such a thing.  What are my options?  What are the pitfalls?  What stuff do I need?  Can I DIY it or do I need to hire a tradie?  Can you show me how these pieces fit together?" and always walk away with a bunch of knowledge.

    Where’s this thread going???

The big B, and let’s not forget Tom, Dick and Harry. Maybe next barbie you attend, they may all be there and you can have some discussion and get their 2 bobs worth……….

As Catalyst said, talk to your local council in the first instance and work out if it’s possible to start of with ( 600sqm sounds a bit small to me)

I checked with Mum and she cannot rcall the exact numbers on the house move as this was part of an overall reno and it was a few years back. At the time she was based in rural NSW and did not have difficulty finding the right guys to do the lift.

Agree with other posters on checking with coucil………. good place to start

    Good Luck

I would estimate it will cost in the vicinity of $20,000 to move the house. I also agree with Catalyst and suggest you first ascertain if the land can be subdivided. 600m2 is potentially large enough for a subdivision but will depend on location and zoning.

    It's a smart idea.

Sapphire101, as someone who has hired Simon Mensforth and Home Delivery I can tell you that they are the last company/person I'd get to relocate a house ( or do anything really!). Try someone else wealthyjvd.

Thanks for the information guys. I have chosen not to relocate but have much appreciated your input!
