    Hi,

Im wanting some advice on those who have priced up both, and have completed one or the other and what their experience was with quality workmanship, time and cost.

Basically im wondering how much you do save if any if you organise tradies to do the reno yourself or getting a company to co-ordinate the whole thing.

Im based in Perth, WA any recommendations for good tradies are welcome too!

    Thanks.

It depends upon what you mean by save? (If it is $$ then it might be 15-25% of what the tradies charge but this is your investment in having someone else take the time to call prices, organise the subbies, sit down and have meetings with yourself, do the running around to suppliers, prepare colourboards, prepare budgets, organise the site, provide bins, cleaning, meet OHS requirements etc). On the other hand, if your time is not of value (ie you don't have another job that you have to attend), then the cost savings may be justifiable (provided that you stick to your budget, are organised, are able to attend site to open, supervise, lock up, ensure site safety, do the running around, order materials, take delivery etc).

We built our last home from the foundation excavations up.  The one before was built and organised by a builder.  Being an owner builder took a LOT of time.  But… we did a much better job and had full control of everything.  Didn't have to put up with some lazy project manager letting things get behind schedule or grimacing everytime we walked into the office to clarify a detail.  It saved us a heap of money BUT if your time means money, a good project manager would be worth it.

    Hi,

Was doing a search on a similar topic, as my partner and I are looking to purchase our first IP and it will be reno job.

Our target suburbs are easily about an hour's drive away, and we do not want to be personally managing every bit, having to drive to open the door for tradies and all that. So, time is more important to us and we would be happier overseeing the big picture. Of course, we are also happy to source for cheap material on the weekends, but clearly, our time is limited.

How do we go about finding a 'project manager' or company that acts on our behalf? Do we simply approach a number of builders, or are there companies who specialise in this reno upgrades and charge a fee to do all the running around for us?

We live in Melbourne. Some advice on how to go about finding a 'project manager' would be great.

    Thanks.

    Hi

An update on my last post.

I believe these 'project managers' that I refer to all called Registered Building Practitioners, registered with the Building Commission of Victoria.

Was thinking of getting a 'Builder Domestic Manager' to manage the reno for our IP. Anyone has had experience using one ot these RBP?

    Regards
    Daniel
