All Topics / General Property / paying rent when sharing?
Hope this is the right forum to ask.
We are a couple considering sharing a 2BR house with another person. My question is do we split the cost of the rent 3 ways (33% each) or do we only have to pay for the room splitting the rent 50/50 between us and the other person.
I guess I feel we should pay more as they have to share with a couple, but I can see issues arising when the other person may have their partner staying over a fair bit too, and yet still only pays 1/3 rent.
So really my question is, what is the standard way rent is split when sharing a house, per room or per person?
Thanks
Dan.
Sharing the other costs like electricity, water, gas, phone bill, food is where arguments may arise as to having another partner over. You have to also take account use of common areas like lounge room , kitchen , bathroom, ect

http://apartments.about.com/b/2006/06/28/splitting-the-rent-among-roommates.htmCan't really give you an great answer as I have not been in this situation but from what my wife has told me from when she was in a similar situation the partner coming over did cause problems with the other flat mates as far as they thought the partner should contribute to the expenses as the partner was over a lot.
Say the total rent is 1200. I would put the couple on 700 and the single on 500. Bills (eclectic, phone, gas, water, internet, etc) split 3 ways.
Maybe you could work it out based on floor area used – eg size of the bedrooms. Masterbedroom users pay 60% maybe. 50/50 wouldn't be fair to you as you have 2 people in one room. 1/3s each wouldn't really be fair either – but closer maybe
