Ok we are nearly finished with our latest reno. Carpets go down in the 3 beds on saturday then the new internal doors next week then thats about it. We have a problem with the front yard. Property is great and love being on a corner block. However EVERY man and his dog think they can just walk across my yard all day long. Impossible to have nice lawns etc and really bugs me.
So questions is simple. Apart from the enjoyment I will get from seeing my front yard fenced is it something that adds much value as they are not the cheapest things to get done Iv noticed?
Its an older property and a picket will suit best. A fencer just left then and I should have the written quote in the mail by Monday id say. I have called 8 fencing companies. Most dont do pickets. I waited home all day saturday and one just simply never turned up. Another iv called twice now and the sales rep has never got back to me. Today was the 1st iv managed to get to quote in the last 3 weeks that iv been trying.
If anyone knows of a good fencer in Lake Macquarie NSW id love to hear about them.

Any non-fencers ever attempted a picket fence themselves? I've been thinking about it and it might not be too hard if using ready-made pickets, which are available pretty cheaply.
Have a go yourself. They are really quite simple if your land is flat and you keep the design basic. All you need is a chop saw or circ saw, spade (or a petrol post hole digger if you have a lot of posts), a drill and some time. Go to your library as most fencing books show how to design and build. My only other advice is not to mortise the rails into the posts – it can weaken the posts and is unecessary aesthetically speaking. And, be prepared for a solid day or two of painting. Paint the rails and posts with one coat before you attach the palings. Prepaint the pailings with first coat too. I tend to us two or three colours to match the clours on he weatherboard. Easy to do if you prepaint palings. This will add value.

Well im over the whole fence issue. In the end I contacted 10 fencing companies. 3 did eventually turn up. 1 gave me a quote of $3650 for around 30meters of fencing and one PA gate which I thought was very reasonable plus a few hundred in paint and our time/labour to paint it. The other 2 said they would post the quotes. Nothing ever came so thats that. In the end we have desided not to do the fence. I do feel it would certainly add value but we have desided to get some kwik kirb concreting done around our boarder and are putting in a nice gargen hedge in a garder bed around the front boundary. My wife wanted this even if we went the fence so we figured bugger it we plan to upgrade our PPOR in a couple of years so we dont want to over do things hear.
Mate doing it yourself would certainly be an option. Im just buggered from all the reno's here so I was giving the fence a miss. Look at getting a guy to come and do the post hole digging for you to save you a lot of hard work then your on your way.

I do my renos not too far from you (Hunter), may I suggest you place a tiny $20 add in the paper and you will see how many handy man/fencers you will get, I got 25 calls in 2 days. I tried a few out and now I have found a couple of guys that charge me less than a fencer and do the job just as good. The other option would be to call the handy man and ask them if the know fencing, etc. Some of the guys that called actually had references to proof that they could do fencing, etc. Plenty of good handy people out there, good luck!
