Hi everyone,
About a month ago, I posted a question regarding installation of ADSL at one of our properties:

We told our property manager that we’ll buy a modem of our choice ($70) as we didn’t feel we should pay $250 for the his premium choice.
Now he’s connected it anyway, sent a letter to me saying that he received permission from the property manager (which he didn’t) to go ahead & that we’d reimburse him. He has sent us a bill for connecting a device which will be removed when his contract ends, so it’s not like it can be used for future tenants.
What makes me furious is that he complained about how the lack of ADSL has affected his work. We were happy to provide it, but on our terms. He couldn’t go with our terms (the $70 plug in wireless modem) because he had already connected the device 1 day prior to asking our permission!
I do not want to pay this. Not because of the money, but because he didn’t go about it the proper way. Please let me know what you guys would do it my situation. I want to be nice but he makes it difficult .

I would just refuse to pay it. If you give in this time, what will he do next? Demand pay TV maybe????

Don’t pay it.
There is no requirement for you to provide it. Telephone, internet and other services like that are a tenants responsibility.
Tell him that yo uwere considering the $70 modem but he acted hastily and installed a more expensive one without your approval.
Advise him that you are dissapointed by his actions and that you hope that dissapointment has faded when it comes time to consider his lease renewal.
I reckon you would be better off without this goose.

Thanks for the advice guys. I will let him know that we will not reimburse him for 3 reasons:
1. He made the connection before seeking approval.
2. He chose an expensive option (which he required for work).
3. He demanded the reimbursement instead of asking politely, I don’t deal well with people like this.Cheers, Lena
You should not have to pay for the modem as this is normal a requirement to run the account.
It’s just like a telephone. You do not have to provide a phone for them so you do not have to provide the modem.
It is up to the renter to pay for this.
ChrisAll post are IMHO.
I agree with yr 3 reasons alotti.The way they dealt with you is not the way to treat yr landlord.

I would just go back to the lease agreement and point out that providing a modem of any sort was not part of that agreement. The tenant can install it if he wants and take it with him but you have nothing to do with it.
