    Hi All,

I need your advice. Have a older brick home with a 5 year old long run iron roof that has never been painted and looks new. I dont really want to paint the roof but there is one section stained by coal near the chimney (metal).

Does anyone know of a product that will remove the stain. Or am I up for a paint job.

Most so far say only solution is to seal over the stain and paint.

    ??

    Cheers

I would seriously get up on the roof with a bucket of hot water and dishwashing liquid and a broom and give it a good clean. I would think it is only greasy smoke residue and on a shiny steel roof it will wash off.

    Hi Fern,

Will let you know. What i did not want to do is get the sticky black stuff on the rest of the roof. Will do the soap thing and have the hgh presure cleaner on standby.
    cheers

    hi fern,

The water blater at 2000 psi did not budge it. Hot water and scrubbing brush – nothing. Sugar soap, wire brush and blaster and its gone.

    cheers

Glad it’s gone, but what remains of the roof surface.
I’m not too sure what a wire brush does to galv. (or is it colorbond?)
    Watch it over time!

    hi Harley,

Yeah that is the other problem, it’s gal so will have to wait and see how the surface holds up.

    cheers

    No real problem DLPP

all you’ve done is strip away the galv protection….
but it will take a few years before the rust comes thru…

is it close to the beach???
    oh dear
    that might only be months….

I suppose at worst, you have to replace a couple of full length sheets of iron.
Not the end of the world!
Were you looking for some cheap fencing?

I would rather paint the roof, when the gal has been striped and the rust starts to set in you will have a bigger problem to deal with, get it painted it will look great and give you some protection. The rust only needs a small unprotected spot like the one you scrubed to start and will spread all over, keep in mind it will take a long time for this to happen but why not deal with it before it even gets started.
