All Topics / Help Needed! / Dodgy Housing Situation
I have an old house on my large (acreage) land, and a new house that we live in. The old house is in good condition, but council will not allow it to be lived in, because of the zoning.
I have had a tennant in the house for a year. Her rent was reduced as she agreed to vacate if council raised an objection. She has since moved on and the house is empty. No problem with council.
Are other people in this situation ?
I would like to rent out the house again, because it makes economic sense that a perfectly good house is lived in and not left to deteriorate.
My solicitor has advised that the the insurer could not cover us because the tanancy is illegal.
Being a scaredycat….I worry about the dodginess of the situation….but….I would like the rent money !
Advice please.

Hi Pen,
I too would be a scardecat if council is saying no to the old house being occupied.
Talk to a Town Planner at the local council for possible zoning changes, or
Possibly rent out as storage space (if permitted by council).
hrm
Storage is a great Idea, maybe proving to them that it’s in good condition via getting a building report done maybe he go or even doing some renovations of such.
All this will be worthit in the long run.
Did anyonesee the metal container things transferred into homes on the news last night? Isn’t that a good idea (if council approves it)

http://www.gpsnetwork.com.auI agree that storage might be worth investigation.
Have a chat to the council and ask them what the land might be able to be used for to get some ideas.
