I heard a rumour of not being able to be an owner builder in Victoria. Is there any truth to this ?

Not true. You can be a owner builder , only 1 every 3 years how ever there are ways around that to like put different peoples name on the paper work.
A new rule was intrduced into victoria if the property is double story or over a certain size you have to go and do a short tafe coarse.
Its a load of sh*t I have built about 8 place in the last 6 years and I can do a good job , I would put quite a few builders to shame.Cheers Rick

Rick, no offence mate but where do you get your info from. The double storey one and certain size limits are news to me, you do not need to do a course only obtain a certificate of consent from the building commission. As rick says this limits building permits to one property every 3 years, and prohibits multi unit developments. I guess rick you use a dodgy building surveyor, and from the sounds of things being frudulent in terms of providing false information on permit applications, you are the type of person that gives genuine owner builders and the industry a bad name.
No its builders that dont know what they are doing that give the industrie a bad name , weather owner builders or builders that shouldnt be builders.
Or tradesmen that aret tradesmen that people use to cut costs.

I want to be an owner builder (say builder manager). I can read drawings and coordinate people. One of my subdivisions has been approved and a notice of decision issued. The second one should have a result in 3 months(hopefully).
How can I learn to build so that I can be builder after say two projects are completed? What kind of course can I do? What steps should I follow in the two developments that are under process?
All help is appreciated.

TAFE’s run dedicated owner builder courses. I am unsure of the total details and how they differ between states. You may even be classed as an owner builder if you do- as you said, supervise, organise, co-ordinate- you become the developer/builder- you then employ and co-ordinate the carpenters, plumbers, sparky’s- and so on.
THe QLD TAFE course is quite good. Would also suggest take in heaps of info from those first initial projects that you are having a builder organise.
Other stuff: I would say you would have to be a certified/licensed owner builder in any state wouldn’t you? I believe that the legislations that are in place are pretty good. An “owner builder” should not be able to become a “spec home” builder. If that makes sense to you. That’s putting the real tradeys out, not just the builder- the sparky’s- the plumbers- the phone/data- the roofers- the air con- the security- the list goes on. So many of those people go through 4 year apprenticeships- and then some. Being an “owner builder” is great, but it has its limitations and its place in the industry.
