Am I paranoid or something? Yesterday, after having a bit more fun as per LifeX’s suggestion above at the expense of yet another Indian caller, I got phoned back 2 more times and there was dead silence on the other end of the line each time.
When I tried to hang up, I found I couldn’t get a dial tone. Were they getting revenge of their own, or am I just imagining it? [blink][blink]
It kept my phone line out of action for over half an hour.[angry2] What trick were they using?

GregA pretty nasty trick.
You can actually tie up the phone for the person you called by just not hanging up your phone.
It is a mean trick as that other person can not ring out or have calls ring in.
There are ways to eventually get them off your line, but it wont stop them from doing it to you repeatedly.

I have actually had a long chat to one nice lady all about India. It is one place I dream of visiting and I asked her a lot of questions! These people are so polite that they will answer anything!
I have said that I want her to speak to the decision maker of the house then passed her to my daughter (then 6 yrs old) for a chat.
But mostly I just say no thanks and hang up.
Being a business I seem to also get a lot of calls from ink cartridge refillers and stationery supply places too [angry2]

Re the calls to your business selling you ink cartridges and stationery, I assume they’d be local Australian businesses Simon? If so, I further presume they’d be members of the Australian Direct marketing Association and as such should respect your wishes if you’ve put yourself on the website’s “Do Not Call” Register. Let us know if they keep hassling you, okay?

Well i have had alot of calls soliciting and i use to do it myself.
The thing is that most have a script or some info that allows them to move foward as in
“are you the home owner”? answer is always NO i rent the place. End of call they can’t get your business because you are not the owner.So listen for the first question and you are never the owner or the person in whose account the name is in.
Sometimes i make out i am a dorky teenager. Sorry Dads not home ring back call finished…lol.
Guess what i hardly get any calls now apart from the occassional local charity which is ok.

Just reporting that I haven’t had a SINGLE Direct marketing call since I put my name on the “Do Not Call” Register at http://www.adma.com.au site on 21st March 2005.
As Stargazer says, I’m not counting calls from charities I’ve supported in the past (and will continue to support). The adma website says that member companies of which I am a customer will still keep ringing me, and I guess this is ok.
I’ve also noticed a decreasing frequency on calls from India since I’ve followed some of the strategies recommended by you kind folk. [biggrin]
Anyone else like to comment about whether you’ve had any calls since you put your name on the “Do Not Call” Register?

And you’re right Leigh, it’s gonna take a groundswell of support to get it on the Roswall, so come on folks, let’s ALL do it. Here’s the message I sent some time ago:
“Indian Phone Calls not blocked by “Do Not Call Register” on http://www.adma.com.auI registered on the “Do Not Call Register” @ http://www.adma.com.au This has massively decreased the amount of unsolicited phone calls to our home phone line, BUT it has absolutely NO IMPACT on calls from Indian telemarketing companies. Does our government choose to be “powerless” under International Law to block such massive invasions of our privacy?
Many of these calls are from Australian companies, and some I suspect are from an Australian company whose largest shareholder is the Australian government. These companies have chosen to base their Call Centres overseas, thus:
1. Taking Australian jobs overseas
2. Neatly sidestepping the membership restrictions placed on them if they are members of the Australian Direct Darketing Association (the “self-regulatory” body)
3. Neatly sidestepping any present or future Australian government legislation restricting their ability to base their marketing campaigns on continued invasions of our privacy.Please, please help.”

I FINALLY GOT ONE! Half an hour ago I got a call from India asking if I was the owner of the home and do I use Foxtel? Having spent all up 9 months in India I asked for the chap to wait one minute and I’ll get someone who can help. I got my Hindi phrase book out and asked for a shoe shine, 1 rupee, a pen, stay at my hotel (cheap hotel/best hotel, are you married, where are you from Mumbai, Calcutta or Chennai? What does your father do for a job, etc. At this stage before I could say Chalo he had hung up.
Gatsby.I blocked my number a while ago, but the other night a got a call which was a recording saying that I had won something, and giving me a number which I could call to retrieve it (cost of call $xx per min).

I used to work for a company that outsourced all its telemarketing (and other services) to Manila and Bangalore. They did this to cut costs as it is cheap labour ie. these people get paid about 40% of what we get for doing the same job. It’s not the caller who is the ogre here, only greedy corporations.
I feel a bit sorry for them because: unemployment is so high, often this type of work is their only option and there is little social security. Also, English is not their first language, and also there are vast culture differences in dealing with various situations.
Have a bit of compassion guys, I know they are annoying, I am still polite but assertive in dealing with these calls.
Whatever they say when I pick up the phone, I just say “who is calling please”. And then when they say they are from ABC company, I just state “I dont want to buy any of your products/services, thanks for your call”. And hang up.
for the couple of dollars a month, a private number is bliss! the problem is at the office. we get a least 3-4 indian telemarketers calling repeatedly for various telco’s. At first we were very annoyed about it (complaining direct to ADMA and the telco in Australia). this worked for a short while then it just started again. Nowadays we actually mock them and fool around with them. Who signs up to anything that these guys sell anyway????
