I missed this one, however it is repeated late tomorrow night, so I’ll record it. I have never understood the whole ‘credit card’ (I prefer the term ‘Debt Card’) addiction. It seems everybody needs one, and everybody claims to pay the balance at the end of every month. If that were truly the way cards are being used, it would be easier, safer and cheaper to simply save one months’ worth of essential & discretional expenditure (perhaps in a separate account) and draw down on that via a debit card. It’s worked well for me through the lean times and the not so lean times, so I really can’t comprehend why it is considered essential for every man, woman and tweenager to have a card or three!

Just curious …. What is this debit card you have? Visa debit? From where did you get it? Westpac, St George?

Because they do give you $50.00 credit even though it’s a debit card. So they still go through all the rigmorol. I don’t know how stringent it is though.
I think the object is to try to convert you to a credit customer at some later stage…at a guess.

I have a VISA debit card from CUA and I didn’t have to go through ANY of the usual checking that goes with applying for a credit card. The only requirement is that their records show that my paycheck went into the bank account that the card is linked to.

Ok, I caught the rerun last night. Not a bad show – the general theme seemed to be that credit cards are:
1) Bad for consumers
2) Good for creditors.
That would seem to be pretty much common sense. The part that surprised me was when the reporter pointed out that one card company makes more profit than Microsoft!On the subject of debit cards – I use a credit union for day to day expenses. No account keeping fees and a free chequebook & Visa card.
Cheers, F.[cowboy2]am not sure if it is true or not… a girl I use to know worked for Visa… she said it was a non profit association that was set up by the banks. as it was non profit yet they clearing accumulated a heap of money, they had to get rid of it somehow. She found herself on some incredible junkets (they sponsored the olympics, so there were meet and greets on regular occasions etc).
