Has anyone thought of or done the REIV ‘Real Estate Agents Representative’ course?
I am thinking about doing it as a way of gaining more knowledge about property and also as a way of entering the real estate arena.I still can’t believe it’s almost xmas!
Merry Christmas,
Best regards,
Andrew Rowe
0415 892 258it would certainly provide some good knowledge for you and i think it’s a great idea. I wouldn’t recommend working as a rep tho whilst trying to make money from real estate… the ethical requirements and legal red tape will prevent you from doing deals and you would be better off as an individual investor. Sales Reps are oversupplied and generally do it pretty tough – a lot of hours for little reward!

The cost of the course is a deposit on a small property!

The course costs $250 for the agents rep one. I have done it, having thought it would teach me a few things, but no, it’s pretty much useless. I’ve almost finished the agent’s licence course (in Victoria by the way), and that too is terrible. Most of the material hasn’t been updated for about 10 years, and the laws etc that have changed since are bundled together on the front of each module, but make it harder to follow & understand what’s current.
Sorry about the rant… Anyway… like Ausprop was saying in the second part of their post, the legal obligations make it a mess since the REIV (and other equivalents) are trying to improve the public perception of agents, so full disclosure as well as approval from authorities are now required. For this very reason, I’m not sure if I’ll completely finish the course, since then I will have those requirements to disclose everything to vendors, when really I won’t be acting as an agent.
Bottom line – investing in R.E would become messy, and the course isn’t very detailed/informative at all. Part of the licence requirements are that as well as the accedemic side of things, you must complete 12-months of full-time work experience, which I guess is where most agents learn the details of the job, since the course is fairly basic.
Hope this is of some assistance – Merry Xmas everyone

Hi Andy,
I am not convinced that a REA course will make you a better investor if that is the ultimate aim.
The information you require to be successful is available through ‘walking the street’, research or for a minimal cost from various government agencies.
Bear in mind REA is a high turnover industry and a great many of them are not investors themselves, as such your hands on and theoretical learning will be somewhat limited.

[email protected]Property Investment Support Available. Ongoing and never stopping.
It doesn’t cost much and will give you some insight into the real estate agents. You can also use it to enable you to sell property, and possibly become a buyers agent.

Andrew,
I did the REIV Agents Rep Course (at the REIV head office in Camberwell, VIC) earlier this year and found it to be EXCELLENT.The course was delivered by current real estate practitioners, highly regarded in their industry, and the course material was current.
In particular, the section on the Residential Tenancies Act left me feeling empowered in regard to managing a property myself – or keeping my PMs on their toes!
I strongly believe in doing my research prior to any negotiation, and this is no different when it comes to buying or selling property. The agent’s rep course left me with an increased understanding of the framework (legislative and unwritten) in which real estate agents operate. So far it has been worth its weight in gold!
And, as with any training course, it’s a good opportunity to network, with many of those doing the course already employed in agencies across Melbourne.

Does anyone know of a cheap Real Estate Licensing course in NSW – preferably available by correspondence?
I think the Real Estate Institute is kidding themselves with their price.

I think its about $350, the info is very up-to-date. You’ll have the course finished in a few weeks if you are dedicated! 3 assignments and one exam to sit.
Recommended if you want to know more about what the agents are obliged to tell you etc.

© 2004 Mortgage Packaging Pty LtdI did the NSW one last year. Didn’t learn much new about investing except for a bit on zoning. Learnt a lot how an office works and how comissions are calculated….
Met a lot of REA’s both good and bad.
The course was very easy and all the exam answers were supplied the night before the exam – everyone got a distinction on my course.
I wouldn’t really recommend it unless you had exhausted all other methods of learning about the industry first.
I think doing deals is the greatest teacher of them all.
Cheers and all the best,

Simon,
Was that the licensed agent course and, if so, how much was it and who did you do it through?

© 2004 Mortgage Packaging Pty LtdI did it at TAFE and from memory it was about $450 though I wasn’t charged after some correspondence about my feelings on the value received.

I completed the course and went into real estate for the past two years. I recently left the industry only a month ago and found that working in real estate and studying real estate were two completely different concepts. I will admitt though that I learnt a great deal about the industry itself and what some of the loop holes are for purchasing properties.
The problem with actually working in real estate is that unless you a very disciplined agent it is hard to allocate time for investing. This is why I am now working a 9-5 job that pays less but I have time to purchase properties and look into more deals after hours.
In queensland the course is around 500 – 600 dollars if i remember correctly and I learnt quite a bit from the course from a legal perspective.
Thanks to everyone that replied to my posting,
The response far exceeded what I expected.
After reading everyone’s posts and doing much soul searching I will go ahead and take the course. I feel the cost of $600 is quite justifiable compared to other courses I have done.
Any my main goal is to gain a better legal understanding of property, not so much what deals can be put together. If you know what you are allowed to do or not allowed to do then you are going to be able to find a best fit solution.
Thanks again everyone, especially Steve for providing this fantastic free site for us all.
Happy New years to you all.
Andy the XI really hope you have a much better experience than I did.
Let us know how you get on and don’t be afraid to share any pearls of wisdom you glean from the course!
Cheers,

Rob,
I beleive the full licencing course is available thru REINSW for about $4000 to $5000 and it was avialble via correspondence. You could complete it in 12weeks full time or one year going in one day per week.
