    Hi guys,

I’m doing bit of a backyard blitz, and I’m looking for 15 or so coco palms.

Does anyone know where I can find cheap coco palms in Perth (Northern Suburbs)?

There was a place at Canningvale markets which had quite mature ones for $15 each – though the property is up near Quins rock so I’m looking for somewhere abit closer:)

    Cheers

    Hi Wayne,

you may want to look at cane palms as an alternative. Cocus plams are not self cleaning and therefore require alot of maintnance to keep looking respectable. They also harbour cockroaches and other nasties. Added to this their seeds make an awful mess as well as self seeding constantly. Cane palms grow jusr as fast, look better and are self cleaning.

    Happy blitzing

    Hi Fiit,

Thanks for the advice, though budget is bit of a factor – do you know how much kane palms are? (approx)

With the seeding, I’ve heard this only happens once they reach 10 yrs +… is this correct?

    cheers

cane palms are sold in pots in a ‘clump’ so you can end up getting between 3 – 6 palms in the one pot. Prices vary depending on size. Look for your sunday flea markets in your area. You are able to inspect before you buy. Also here in Qld. (rural areas) people will plant them on their vacant land and sell by the side of the road. Take a drive out of town and have a look.

    cheers

    Hey Wayne,

Have been doing up ourt garden and found a good nursery out at Cannington called “Trees-A-Green”. Kind of the WA Salvage of the nursery world although they would probably cringe if they heard that!

I live North of the river as well so can be a trek but is good value. Otherwise you can try the nurseries out Wannaroo way but tend to be more expensive. Do Wanneroo markets sell trees and palms? Maybe an option!

    cheers

WAyne, Trees r green are certainly the place to go for budget plants. Even other plants as a filler you can get ppunnets for 50c and stuff. Very cool.

Cane palm were about $15 for a young plant, about $50 for a 2 metre tall one at Bunnings. Well that’s the price up here in GEro, assuming all bunnings are same prices…

We have stupid coc palms here at our place and I hate them!!! Stupid bloody orange berries all over the joint, is pissing me off!!!! GRRRR.
Thank god it is school holidays soon.

Yesterday I was speaking to a landscape architect about a job I am working on.

We were discussing the various types of palm trees and what they would be worth (the ones in questions are about 7m high).

He said that cocos palms were worth virtually nothing and that they are technically considered to be a “weed” these days [blink]

    Hi Guys,

Is it mainly the seeding that annoys people about Coco palms?

I actually like the look of them – though i guess everyone thinks differently:)

If it is the seeding, then I plan to sell this house within 5 yrs…so hopefully i won’t have to worry bout seeds dropping everywhere:)

Anyway, thanks all for your input – i’m gunna take a trip down to Trees r green on the weekend – so i’ll let ya know how i go:)

    Hi Wayne,

going back to my first post, I’m sure you’ll agree that the cocus palms are a bad idea.

As for the comment on not having to worry about the seeding problem as you will be selling in 5 years. Surely if someone is kind enough to give you free advice, it would be only fair to think of the next poor investor who will have to clean up the mess. The amount of negative energy that will be flying your way will be doubled as you were fully aware of the situation.

Still if you only want to think in terms of yourself, be prepared to see the advice you seek from others dwindle.

    Warm regards

    Hi Fiit,

My issue is more a budget issue, rather than consideration for future purchasers. (even though I would love to keep them happy too!)

I have a very limited budget (after spending too much on interior rennovations) – therefore I’m forced to look at cheap alternatives for the gardens. Ideally I would like to put kane plams throughout – though I don’t think I will be able to afford this.

    Thanks for your advice.

    Hey Wayne,

Why are you so keen on palms out of curiosity? Are you going for the Bali theme backyard? If not, why not consider a more native garden and use things like grasses, grevillea’s, etc??

Good for Perth for the water restrictions as well!!

    Just my 2 cents!!

    G’day Jhopper,

yeah, I’m going for that “tropical” look:)

Though if it gets to costly, I may have to look at alternatives…

I’ll be putting some natives in aswell – though to create that “height” aspect I quite like the palms:)

    Cheers

Just another thought to help with cost saving, the local transfer stations have free mulch. Have to pick up yourself but is the cheapest way I know of dressing up the garden. The mulch is not as good as from the garden centres but hey, for nothing I’m not complaining!

Wayne, when you go on the weekend, look down the back as this is where the established trees were last time I looked.

    Good luck!
