a lot of the people on this forum and all around the country have large spending habits that exceede their means, this will often result in them paying off huge debts over a lifetime of work. The flip side is that if you reduce spending and focus on investing…you will have more time to spend with family and friends….

…Poor Money Habits, to me is a barrier that prevents a lot of middle class workers from ever spending much valuable, prized time with family and friends as they pay off credit cards and other material posessions and personal debt acquired over christmas. I know that I hardly ever saw my father when I was young as he was always working…..
emcdonald was the only person who suggested going to extra effort to save money, while giving to others. this is true Xmas spirit. ever heard of the saying “its the thought that counts?” well this person is a good example.
the rest of you were all looking to take from others. whats worse, you could not even be bothered considering what would make others happy, or whether your actions would make them unhappy.
um, …..I can vouch for everybody who posted that we were just joking, and if you had read many of the posts of the people who posted in the past on other threads, you would find that all of them are kind and compassionate people

I will spend Xmas NOT working, but instead enjoying the company of family and friends, who will display genuine warmth and giving. I will happily smother the bottom of the Xmas tree, and provide the best Xmas meal possible without thought of the costs.

…well thats nice that you come from a rich family who can afford to do that, the majority of the working class who do so, will spend time away from their kids and stress about credit card bills for the next year if they took your advice…

Crashy, I beleive that you posted with the best of intentions and are basically a good person.
As are most people (yes, investors) on this forum. (most of the people on this forum are trying to build themselves a better life so as they can spend more time with family and friends, they have not had the luxury afforded to them of having had a lot of money)
However, I feel that being righteous, jumping to conclusions and passing judgements on people you do not know could mean that you may have missed the spirit of christmas.
You came from a rich family that you say were tightwads….and so i understand where you are coming from and why you don’t see the funny side.
I came from a poorer family who spent too much, and as a result saw a lot less of my family. Which is why I find a lot of the posts humurous…..I am also sick and twisted, but thats another story.
I hope that you do have a laugh this christmas, at the jokes you find funny of course.

Great post! I read Crashy’s in detail and I could tell he missed the point, but I can understand this based on his explanation of his past.
I think everybody who posted on this thread would agree Christmas is a time for family and for giving. I too will be hosting Christmas at my place this year and not counting the cost. I’ve got the whole extended family coming over and am throwing the biggest spread I can manage with roast turkey and lamb, cold leg of ham and largesse in every regard.
I’m not skimping on the pressies either. I’m buying my niece a $1,000 share portfolio this year as she just turned 5. I do this with all my nieces and nephews when they turn 5.
Crashy, if you read my post I poked fun at the “tightwad” gift givers. ie. the mad aunt that gives that silly gift and wouldn’t notice if it bounced back. I have a tightwad Aunt and a tightwad Sister but I don’t let that turn me into a tightwad. In fact I buy great presents for them both every year and don’t care that they don’t reciprocate even though its well within their means.
I think this thread was heavily steeped in sarcasm and self indulgence. It was clearly not meant to be read as a literal prescription for actual things to do over Christmas.
I’m sorry, but the “only joking” certainly holds true for this thread. Ambo72 had a major frown emoticon on his post about working Christmas. This means he “wasn’t happy” with the situation. And all the smilies in the other posts should hint at the sarcasm in play.
Seriously, it is the season to be jolly and you should take a leaf out of your own judgmental book and apply this thinking prior to posting.

Great work! I regularly buy my Christmas presents from the WorldVision catalogues, or from New Internationalist or others. In this way, not only do your loved ones get some fantastic gifts, but you’re giving a gift to the less well off who don’t enjoy the standard of living that we do and could do with some Christmas cheer.
I always throw a couple of the little things in the gift basket for family such as the Coffee direct from East Timor which cuts out the middle man. And I buy the Christmas cards for $30-$50 each which give a child a year in school or a year in food etc.
There’s always creative ways to give if you’re generous of spirit.

Not sure if you realise, but everyone has their story, and perhaps some of us are rostered on, but CANNOT get out of it? Did you even bother to as why we were working for that period of time?
Perhaps we’ve already had our Christmas with our families before they’ve gone on holidays themselves? Perhaps some of us spend the whole rest of the year as though it is Christmas with our families anyway? not just giving gifts one day of the year that everyone else does!
Suggest you get your facts straight before you come on here and have a go at people.[weird]

all of my family have made plans for this christmas, so theres no where i need to be which is a shame.
i volunteered to work christmas but thats all taken care of and i wont be needed.
my biggest dilema at moment is the christmas tree donation. i have 100 dollars to buy a pressy for it, do i buy five x 20 dollar pressies for the kids or one 100 dollar pressy?
might squeeze out another 20 dollars and buy four x 30 dollar pressies instead.
oh well off to target to see what i can buy [biggrin]
although i havent had a decent christmas in a couple of years, mine will be very quiet sitting at home alone, for those of you with family to go to, you are already wealthier than i am.
please just remember that their will be alot of old and homeless people around, i might just volunteer for a soup kitchen christmas day, so at least someone will appreciate the gesture.

A few suggestions to make the season special (& inexpensive) :
Print out all those internet jokes that you like and send them to others to give them a laugh and/or take them along to your local aged care facility and entertain the residents (it will make you feel good too).
Instead of sending cards, phone the people you really want to stay in touch with – it will probably cost you less.
Emphasise to family and friends that you don’t expect any presents but that their presence is important – have a simple meal together and have some fun games, singing, dancing etc. – enjoy yourselves and find the best in each other (and tell each other what that is!)

Unfortunately it has become a big marketing thing for retailers and there is all this pressure on people. Well, if your relationship with your family or parents are has been no good for years then one day of the year of everyone smiling and giving each other consumer items isn’t going to change that.
