For those of you who own properties in and around Invercargill.

“The cost of a massive earthquake that shook the south on Tuesday last week is likely to top $1 million.

A 7.3 magnitude quake, centred in the Tasman Sea about 250km west of Invercargill, struck at 9.26am.

Earthquake Commission spokeswoman Joanna Martin said on Friday 219 claims had been received for damage to residential properties from the quake.

Of those, 105 were from Invercargill residents, 43 from the rest of Southland, with the remainder mostly from Otago.

The claims were valued at $897,623.

Most were for minor damage to inside walls, hot water cylinders, doors, ceilings, windows and cracked wallpaper.

Residential property owners have 30 days from the time of the quake to lodge a claim with the commission.

About 50 business-related claims had been received by insurance companies, although no value has yet been placed on those.

AdvertisementAdvertisementInsurance Council chief executive Chris Ryan was unable to be reached for comment.

Meanwhile, the south seems so far to have been spared any aftershocks from the quake.

A 3.8 magnitude aftershock was recorded about two hours after the initial earthquake, but the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences website has not reported any since.

As many as 20 aftershocks were predicted in the few weeks after the initially jolt.”
