All Topics / Help Needed! / ABS & RPData Conflicting
When researching a couple of towns I’ve checked data at both these sites and often find they do not match ie: ABS showed one town as having decreased by 30 people between 1996 and 2001, wheras RPData showed the same town increasing by 800. I’ve found this isn’t isolated to jsut this twon, other checks have founds descrepancies as well.
Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is? Am I missing something that I should be considering?

PKHi PK,
are the sites comparing apples with apples?
Maybe one is looking at he town and one at the district or postcode … or something like that. Do they show specific populations?

MJT is probably correct to a large degree. ABS might go off boundries while RP might go off postcode. Also RP might be a bit more bullish in how they figure population changes.
Also there has been a large migration to QLD from Sydney, etc so that may play a large part.
Of course this is simply my opinon.
Rgds.
Lucifer_auHi and thanks for your replies. The towns I’m looking at are all WA so suspect boundaries may have effect. But can’t see on either what the boundaries are.
However, the difference in population is staggering, one showing the town decreasing and the other showing it increasing. Makes a big difference.
Not sure where to go next to verify the population of the town.

Licenced Agent/Sales ManagerIs it worth contacting the Local council for a head count? Would they have this sort of info freely available?
[hmmm]
Matt
Hi Matt,
I havne’t rang the council, but an online search found a submission the council had put to parliment and in it they were using the ABS figures and stated that this was the locality (not just the town).
As the ABS figures are lower than RPData, I’m not sure what RPData are counting.
I will ring the oucncil but it appears they use the ABS stat’s.

PKHi PK,
While ABS is the best we have unfortunately by the time the data is ‘crunched’ it is out of date.
For example I have just been notified of a change in our schools funding levels for 2005 based on information from the last census – which if my memory serves me correct is three years ago.

Hi Derek,
Ah yes, the SES scores, fun aren’t they.
Having looked at the RPData site though, it appears they are using the same years when they talk about population ie: 1996 and 2001, so I had assumed that they must have been gettign theri data from the ABS initially, but it doesn’t appear to be the case or if it is there is definetley different boundaries. Well, I’m still following this up and will post the answer if I ever it.
Regards
PK
