    Ok, this forum is “opinionated” so here it is..

    PI.com is far too tolerant of trolls,spam and flamewars. There is a lot of useful info and top posters on here, there is also too much garbage to wade through.

    Now good moderation is not easy, it’s unpaid and it takes time. It’s probably also a team effort and somewhat of an art.

    I for one would spend more time on here however if the trolls were stepped on. There’s one I have in mind that is running riot at the moment…

    Grrrr.

    Hi waySolid,

    If you have something agains someone, PM that person, then if they don’t stop, talk to Admin about it.

    By definition trolls like being fed, it sustains them. I have never talked to a troll online directly, perhaps I should? History teaches that reasoned replies to a troll are like fire extinguishers loaded with petrol.I don’t have something against anyone! Just the content of their posts.

    I just leave the forum and spend time elsewhere online. My loss? Perhaps. If you add up enough good people doing this then you see the collective damage a troll does. I have seen another online community I used to visit regulary; destroyed by a particulary active troll.

    I prefer to spend my time reading posts that make me think constructively, and post similar replies if I can.

    When a post gets to several pages with trolling content (and there are too many of them) then there is a problem.

    Zero tolerance:

    * Personal insults.. You goose, you fool, etc etc
    * Ramping
    * Taking posts off topic
    * Flamewars

    Now to be really opinionated.. I found this forum middle 2003 and sometime later the Somersoft forums. It’s my opinion that Somersoft has a much healthier discussion going simply because there are a few strict admins stopping most of the rubbish that goes on, and people are banned if they act like that. And what’s with all these people popping up with 1 post mysteriously supporting their favourite troll? Far far too many.

    I have no barrow to push, I simply enjoy talking investing/property wherever (I’m a lurker/poster in 10 or more investing/property forums). Also this is just my own opinion of course.

    Does anyone think there isn’t a problem?

    Actually I think that post came out too negative..

    Things are pretty good here, just think they could be a lot better thats all.

    Half the problem is that some of the moderators are trolls themselves, seemingly focused on their post count and hot air.

    WaySolid,

    Steve asked me to do two things as Moderator: remove ads and posts I found to be personally offensive… it’s a pretty short job description… as far as doing it, the advertisers do a thousand of these when you remove the ads: [angry2][angry2][angry2] and have a fit. As to the second bit, what is personally offensive to one person is healthy debate for another… name-calling etc is removed etc, but it’s hard to stop people YELLING IN CAPS; or doing some of those other things that cross netiquette.

    This is a pretty laid-back forum in the main, and pretty democratic too. Mods can’t really just censor heaps of stuff- it’s too subjective. I think when things become too prescriptive, it suits some but not others.

    This is a Forum for some 30,000 members- it’s hard to please everyone.

    SuperTed, you could always fo as geo suggested if you’re concerned about something- PM the person- Moderator or not, and express your concern.

    Hi,

    Hmmm – sometimes I feel that the forum goes haywire and that’s when I retreat for a while. Then I regain enthusiasm and return full of beans.

    The moderators do an exceptional job and I am in their debt for their time and willingness. Sure – things could always be better, but in this case the harvest is plentiful but the labourers are few.

    Regards,

    Steve McKnight

    Hi All
    Perhaps any topic would be better covered if there were less replies looking like pedestrian crossings, so busy doing the he said she said stuff and not addressing the issue, nor adding any thing new or constructive. This forum is the greatest tool ever devised, free speech to huge crowd, perhaps a bit heady for some.
    Looking forward to more constructive input.
    cheers

    I’m pretty much in agreement with Way.

    thecrest’s comments on stuff not addressing the point is also on the ball & is purely an administrative issue. It’s something that is managed at Somersoft but not here.

    I see the difference between the two being this is a laisse faire forum & Somersoft is almost socialistic.

    Which is better – heck depends what you want out of them :)

    But I will say that generally the experience level of moderators is less at PI than Somersoft – And that’s not a criticism guys, it’s simply the way things are. It offers opportunities as well as creating issues.

    Cheers,

    Aceyducey

    Happy to get that last post in here about adding to topics via healthy discussion. I personaly feel the troll comment is another of the euphomisms for people you personally dont agree with. Lets see them all in here as I fell this is a healthy discussion between people of difering levels of knowledge and experience. Those with strong opinions will always speak loudest whether they are right or wrong.

    I’m happy to contribute and i use personal examples to assist the novices to see the fuller picture. Some of these are left alone but increasingly they are moderated out. I have noticed this change over the last month or so and feel that the “troll” comment covers disagreement in this case.

    It saddens me that the so called free speach is sadly lacking in some cases as I truly love to read all opinions and not just those that agree with me.

    Steve, ths is a great forum as it is. If people want it more structured then let them go to somersoft(im not there at least) for those that value the input of other stay where you are.

    Thanks for letting me share this small point.

    Hi Clare,

    Welcome to the forum!!!

    Well, although I am certainly not a newbie here, even at this late stage of my membership I have only just recently been informed of the definition of a “troll”!!! From what I understand, it is (please correct me if I am mistaken please veterans) someone who is argumentative for the sake of causing disharmony betweem people within a community (such as a chatroom or public forum) like this one. In short, trolls like to come in a cause mischief!!!

    I hope this is correct.[blush2]

    Cheers, [biggrin]

    Interesting article, Derek. The last seriously abusive guy who behaved like that in here, did get banned, but he sure caused a bit of grief during his stay.
