All Topics / General Property / Fault lines threat to NZ – fact or fiction?
Some years ago, I was speaking to a geologist friend of mine, who mentioned that NZ was riddled with fault lines running through it, but that there were 6 in particular that posed a real danger.
I never really gave it too much thought until recently, when I started posting here, and found out people were investing in NZ.
Do those who invest in NZ know of the possible threats, aside from the usual quake problems it experiences from time to time??????? BTW this is not a joke, I believe there is documented evidence to suggest it is not a matter of “if” but “when” major disaster will strike.
Please let me know if you know more……..I love NZ and travel there on holidays a bit, would like to know times to avoid!!!!

Hi Monopoly
You said:
I love NZ and travel there on holidays a bit, would like to know times to avoid!!!!Well actually the times to avoid are from Jan 1 to Dec 31 as an earthquake could strike anywhere at anytime AND there won’t be any warning.
The last major earthquake struck Napier in February 1931 which killed 251 people. That is 73 years ago and a lot of water has passed under the bridges around Napier since.
As to when a major earthquake is due to strike again weeeelllll you could be killed tomorrow in a car accident on your way to work.
A number of very minor earthquakes have occurred in the last few days in a number of areas of NZ.
As long as NZ has a number of earhquakes every year then not a problem. It is when there are very few earthquakes then it is a time to get concerned because the pressure will be building up along the numerous fault lines and something big may occur.
I seem to remember that a big earthquake occurred in Newcastle a number of years ago which killed a few people.
So to sum up why worry about when an earthquake may strike, life is too short.
At least in NZ you don’t have to worry about termite damage to your house.Regards
I live about 300 metres from a major faultline.
They recommend a 20 metre setback when building on a fault. Its just part of life here, we had two local shakes over the weekend. I’d be more worried about aussie fires than kiwi earthquakes.

Fair enough, as long as you are okay with it; that’s cool. I adore NZ; it is a gorgeous country and I hope nothing happens to it EVER, as I would really miss my kiwi holidays now and then.
As for bushfires; yeah, I’d be heaps worried – if I lived in the bush (but I don’t)[blink].

hi monopoly
i think you are over estimating the impact of earthquakes, you amke it sound like there is a risk the whole country will disappear into the ocean, i certain hope thats not the case. But then again i live 10km from the coast if a bit fell off, gee i’ll have loveley coastal veiws. Hmmmm you got me thinking where are these fault lines exactly??

there was a progrma on the TV this last week by funny coincidence!
Yep NZ and the volcanoes and faults
did you know that parliament adn govt buildings and I beleive those in affected areas are all sitting on specially designed buildings that CUSHION the impact when there are tremors etc, that most of the roads or freeways, could go anyday like a sister city called LA?That the risk takes go to places where the sulpha lake is, with its colourful water, and hazardous vapours etc.
Earth quakes whatever, does not stop people from buying or building, nor does it stop mother nature from producing some amazing effects
cheers
I think it was on channel 7
” a blind man may see what a sighted man may not”
I’m with you Westan, I think we should immediately start looking for the fault lines that would give us coastal views when the bits fall off – do you think that some well placed charges could speed things up a little!?!?
Seriously, have a look at Canberra and the bushfires, Brisbane and the 1974 flood, Newcastle and its floods and earthquakes, and anywhere else in Aus and you come accross nature at her best. NZ just has some differing issues!!!
I remember when I was little I saw a tv show about volcanoes and spent the next several nights petrified lying awake waiting for one to erupt nearby – lucky my family had emigrated from NZ, otherwise it might have been real!! (chuckles!!)

Hi Guys
Earthquakes, read on:
Small Quakes Rumble Through Rotorua11/05/2004 12:56 PM
NewstalkZBThe Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences has confirmed a series of small earthquakes in Rotorua Monday night.
Wairakei duty officer Tony Hurst says between 7.30 and nine o’clock there were at least a dozen small earthquakes, the biggest measuring 2.5 on the Richter scale.
But Mr Hurst says they were not strong enough to be recorded properly and were only felt in a limited area, including Western Heights.
The earthquakes were centred a few kilometres west to northwest of the city and were very shallow.
Actually I’ve experienced a number of earthquakes. The biggest was in Dannevirke in about 1990 and was 6.5 on the Richter Scale. Quite exciting. It caused about $3m worth of damage.
Regards
Ok guys lets stop talking about earthquakes, our discussion is starting to cause them, [worried].
can we talk about ?
ummmm what was that. did you feel that ?
regards westan

Nah mate.
It was only an extra strong gust of wind that you get in your part of the country.
Regards
Plenty of hot air going around guys – could be that!!
But we have monopolised Monopoly’s serious thread with our humour….. tsk tsk
It is true that NZ is much better known for earthquakes than we are here, some areas more so than others. I guess a check with the insurers and the local council webpages and disaster planning pages helps get a feel for the risks. Much the same as I did here in Brisvegas when looking at areas near the river – speak to council and find out the weather issues (flood in this case)
Good thread Monopoly – something different but valuable to us to think about.Cheers

Thanx for the comment Castledreamer,
I am glad to see people didn’t take it too seriously. I realise there are real quake issues in NZ, and it does concern me, especially people living on or near major fault lines (not that I can tell you exactly where they are, geographically speaking).
If people are happy to invest in NZ, that is cool; after all, it is a beautiful country. I just wondered whether people really looked into it and/or were aware of the dangers.
As someone said, you can get hit by a bus outside your front door, true!! But there are accidents, and then there are miscalculated judgements aren’t there?
If it has made people think then that can only be a good thing, can’t it??? It was not intended to deterr anyone, only to raise awareness. As for the TV show re NZ quakes, sorry I missed it, and yes that is quite a coincidence; maybe my mind knew about the show but my body (i.e. eyes/ears) didn’t get the message in time to turn on the telly!!! LOL
All in all, NZ is a great place to visit, and I hope to keep doing so for many many years to come.

Maurnhi monopoly,
I’m from wellington, where you have earthquake drills at school, where you feel tremors where the glasses in the cupboard rattle, and you occasionally stand under a doorway or get under the table! Oh yeah, and ruapehu was puffing last time I skiied on it, too – there was still lots of black ash around from the last eruption…yep, it’s all true, and boiling mud pools in rotorua and boiling crater lakes are also all part of the fun….hot streams….the ground is warm in rotorua from the thermal activity. free hot water…a lot of homes use this to heat.
coromandel, hot water beach – take a spade and dig a hole at low tide, lie in it and let the hot water from underneath fill it up to make a natural hot spa pool right on the beach.
Yeah, i grew up on a fault line.
you won’t find brick houses in wellington that much (unless reinforced) for that reason – wooden houses are fantastic as they have a lot of give.our school was closed down as it was due for multi-million dollar earthquake reinforcement the school just couldn’t afford.
what else?
Oh yeah.earthquakes are awesome. And you could get struck by lightening waiting for one…joy to the world
Hi Guys
If you are really worried about earthquakes have a look at this site:
Personally, I am more worried about what is going on in Iraq.
Regards
Gotta hand it to you guys (and girls) I admire your spunk!!!
I feel like I was being a real “worry-wart” about the whole earthquake and fault lines thing, but I guess what I didn’t consider was people’s experiences.
For those of you who have lived in NZ or have invested there, you would obviously know far more about the place than I could ever possible know as the occasional tourist on holiday there.
Thanks for enlightening me; and putting my mind at ease. If there is one thing I can say for SURE and that is, if spirit counts for anything, then the strength demonstrated in your responses will keep NZ shores safe for centuries. [thumbsupanim][thumbsupanim][thumbsupanim]
Cheers,
Jo
