All Topics / Opinionated! / Selecting growth towns
I just don’t like small towns because of possible problems in finding tenants.
After all, what is one to do if the place is empty for six months ?
My preferred size is 20,000 +.
However, being on the prowl for signs of population explosions, I noticed yesterday a town which has shown some rather strange population movements.
Which town am I talking about ?
Ararat in Victoria. I haven’t got a clue about that town, never having been there.
The population declined in 1996 some 14% to 6890
Yet, in 1998 the population suddenly is shown as
11,655.So what happened ?
Amazingly, despite the sudden spurt from 1996 to
1998 there was apparently again a decline of 1.3% between 30/6/1998 and 30/6/1999.Very strange.
What happened ?
Ararat is a service centre for the surrounding agricultural areas (wheat and grazing).
Clearly sometime between 1996 and 1998 there was some form of investment in the area which brought
a sudden influx of people into the area.Does anyone have a clue how to explain such a sudden increase and thence a steady resumption of the previous decline ?
Scott (Pelican Investments), any comments ?

Aliens maybe?
‘Eat rich food, barbeque a yuppie’ [greedy]
Aliens ? You mean immigrants ?
Nah, the Italian and Chinese marketgardeners are no longer working nor are their children prepared to do back breaking work.

I used to live near that town in 95 but always thought it was a bit of a nothing place – not as pretty as Stawell, and stuck between Horsham (which is bigger) and Ballarat which is much, much bigger.
There was a very large railway project going on out west in 95/96 onwards but I’d be more inclined to believe that an error may have occurred somewhere along the line. Alternatively give the local council a call if you really need to know.
