My basic rule of thumb is it takes a population of 250,000 to be self sustaining. Any smaller and you are at the mercy of the main industries in the area.
Let’s see… [grad] Australia has a population of about 20 million. Divide that by 250,000 = only about 80 towns. Since we have what is it – 8? states and territories, that’s approx. only 10 towns per state/territory in the entire country able to survive without large industry.
Well, I guess that leaves plenty for everyone else anyway! [blink]
