Can anyone tell me more about Bairnsdale, Vic, and the area around it? I have searched through google and found the local info site, sounds nice enough, and properties are a decent price – but there must be more to know!
Much appreciated. For something a little different, why not check out http://theinvestingcrew.com

Bairnsdale is a quiet, large, country town.It has gorgeous beaches within about 1/2 hour drive.
I don’t think it has much of a transient population, more generational I would think, although there are gorgeous seaside resorts within 1/2 hr drive, which are popular during holiday seasons, and very quiet in the off season.
A lot of people retire in these areas.
Hope that helps a little….Knowledge
The beaches sound great! I read that the population of nearby places like Lakes Entrance swell massively in season, do Australians (still trying to figure you lot out! [biggrin]) use / rent holiday homes? Quite a popular kiwi thing, and makes owning a holiday home / bach more of an investment.

We holidayed in Lakes over Xmas and made some minor inquiries into investing in a holiday home down there. I can’t remember exactly now, but someone quoted us that holiday rental are only let out for an average 11 weeks each year.
Apparently the place is a ghost town anytime other than peak summer.
However, if you can buy and hold, clifftop houses with uninterupted seaviews 180 degrees (and nice homes at that) are around 400,000 and renting for around 1200pw to holidayers in peak.
A fair shortfall, however, I can’t help thinking that as the area is apparently where a number of people are moving to in retirement, and as the years go buy, that those cliff top homes will convert their million dollar views into $$$$

Bairnsdale is stuck in the 70’s (the boring part.) The town supports the local dairy area
and the community is very close knit. Ie; holiday makers would not get the same warm welcome as in lakes. more of a farmers town.
Easy to pick a fight in the pub, some country agro….
But… the highway gets backed up for miles every long weekend as melbourne flocks through there to Lakes area. So the city has on eye on this town.
Hop-e that helps.
