Obvious answer, investing… because I’d probably not have to work by now had I known then what I know now.

    Ethics

Frankly it’s more important that the investing/financial knowledge at the end of the day.

I see how poor the ethics of business & political leaders in Australia have become & are constantly appalled at the poor example set by the education system as a whole (not individual teachers, who are trapped within the system).

    Without ethics societies break down.

    Cheers,

    Aceydeucey,

If ethics are “a system of rules or principles for behaviour within a group or society according to which actions are judged” (from the Heinemann Australian Dictionary) then I believe the family home is the best place to learn them… of course it would help if that was backed up in the school system.

    cheers

I have to agree with Richmond here about ethics, I was going to say the same before I read his reply. Family sets the best example from a young, impressionable age, and there has to be a line throughout further education, but I do believe family forms the foundation. If ethics are missing to start with, it’s very hard to correct this at a later age.

TO answer sis’ question: yes I would have liked to learn much more about money matters, investing etc, I learned NIL about this!

Not so much what I didn’t learn at school, rather what I just didn’t learn (until too late in some cases)…

Being a ‘spunk’ only helps so much!
Smoking is not that easy to give up after all.
I no longer want to be ‘put down’ at 37 (so young)
Mum and Dad wouldn’t really have put me up for adoption.

It would be nice if school subject does have ‘basic investment’ for all students. Then students be able to learn the basic things instead of have to wait ’til finished uni to aquire this knowledge themself if they choose too.

    Kind regards

Could you imagine though if they did introduce investing what would be on the curriculum?A s

What would they teach – budgeting, mortagages, shares, property, managed funds, wraps, options, warrants?

A (relatively) small group of us can’t agree on the best way to invest in property. Do you think the Education department could come up with something useful for everyone? Nice idea though.

    Shushar,

What would they teach – budgeting, mortagages, shares, property, managed funds, wraps, options, warrants?

I believe that teaching any of this topics is better than nothing at all. At least students learn the basic things while they are at school.

If I knew what I was doing at school back then I would do subject like ‘economic’ or ‘business study’ and so for because that will help in my basic investing in the future.

    Kind regards

    Hi Chan,

actually thats kinda funny, i did do business economics and all thoses different business, accounting and economic classes, but even then, what they did teach, was nothing on investing…

true to the fact, but i dont ever remember being taught how to invest, but instead, always questioned… “what is the point of this subject?”

    Cheers,
    sis

I too did Economics at school & my son is doing Business studies.

I think where these subjects are failing for most people is that they are too “big picture” and don’t discuss how the information can help you in your day-to-day life.

I was very good at monetary policy and the impact that has on the economy and federal policy but it didn’t help me get a mortgage. :)

Although today’s Business Studies course is more practical as the name suggests the focus is on Businesses not individuals.

That ethics are not required to get ahead.

(Not that I subscribe to this, but in school the good guy usually won in the end).

I did a lot of science subjects which does not help even a bit for my investing journey. The subjects like 4 units maths, physics, engineering science…and I also questions what’s going to use for in the future and up until now it’s still useless for me. Luckily I did computing studies which does help me.

    Kind regards

Maybe they could base it on the book Richest Man in Babylon that covers the basic principles of investing.

Hey Sis are you looking for a video review?

For all others that have no idea what I am talking about, there was a giveaway at the Expo on the weekend.

Jamie McIntyre’s video entitled What I Didn’t Learn at School, But Wished i Had?

    I haven’t watched it yet!
