I have just started reading about property investing and I am convinced it is the way to go. I have purchased my own house in Queensland in the past twelve months and would like to start a property portfolio. I am not very clued up on matters of money and would appreciate any tips or recommendations on Financial Advisers.
I dont know if you can help me. I live in Queensland and i am wondering if there are any financial advisers that anyone can recommend to give me a kick start with investing. I would like an adviser that has good property knowledge but can deal with other investment options as well.
new regulations happening in financial industry about compliances etc.
They dont have the best reputation at times, so do check credentials thoroughly
Those on commissions have a product to sell, however there are those that will give you the commission, provided they receive a fee for service, eg fee and commission, the commission being refunded to client.
Have to declare interest in this and how they are paid.
check if they are members as well of financial planning associations etc, eg FPA (many)
Often financial advisors are driven by motives other than giving you the best advice possible because they are either employed by an institution (and thus biased towards their funds) or else they will (try to ) place you with the fund which gives them the largest fee.
There are however financial advisors around who charge you a fee and at the same time will give you a rebate of whatever fees they receive from the institutions.
It looks to me as if that type of advisor will give you a more square deal.
Getting some advice is a damn good idea actually as they know about Super Funds and can inform one about making extra tax effective contributions to one’s Super fund.
Milhouse, I would recommend that you visit a bookstore/library and check out lots of good books.
If you have a look at the book listing in the Heads Up or Opinionated (I forget which) thread, it’ll be a good start. It’s a sticky, so it will be at the top of the listing.

An excellent site to have a read of is this FAQ site. Yes its run by a financial adviser – who is a friend of mine, but the info is free and well written. I had copied most of his real estate advice in the helpfile of my ez-rent app for a long time..
Milhouse, further to my last, I’ve just remembered that FreemanFox (Peter Spann’s company) have a financial advisorty service that discusses both shares and property.
