There is a room with three ordinary light switches and an adjacent room with an ordinary table lamp within it. With a single trip to the other room, you must determine which of the three switches controls the lamp.

    think laterally!

Do you mean a single trip to the room with the lamp?

Don’t ordinary table lamps just plug into the power point? I’d follow the cord [;)]

Is this one to ask yes or no questions to? If so, are there any cords or wires visible?

Just a table lamp plugged into the wall and three switches in the next room.

Leads etc don’t figure in the answer.

There is no way to tell which switch it is by looking at leads, power points etc.

    Keep thinking.

So no doors or windows where you could see the light if you try each switch in turn?

Nope. Rooms are seperate and doors are closed. No way you can see it until you move between the rooms. One trip only – no going back.

Process of elimination? Maybe the other 2 control lights in that room?

we can assume one controls the light in the room with the switches,so that narrows it down to 2.Maybe we are able to see the electricity meter, and if we turn one on at a time,we could see which one uses less power, and safely assume that one is the lamp……

Don’t think outside the situation I have presented. You only need to refer to the three switches and the two rooms.

why do u have to determine which one, why not just turn all three on, that will still turn the lamp on [:p]

    Cheers Matt

maybe the room light in the lamp room and the switch room are both on,so the switch that is still off is the lamp.

do the two rooms have a light each, and do these switches control them?

    Simpler.

Nothing extra than I told you.

There is a panel with three switches. One controls the table lamp next door. They all look identical and there is no way that you can see which switch activates the lamp until you leave the room and enter the next room.

The other two switches do nothing.

    Keep thinking

ok,we break the glass on the globe in the lamp, making sure we don’t break the filament. We drape the curtains over the broken lamp, and go to the other room.We try a switch a a time, waiting for 10 minutes between each.If the other room catches fire,we know we have found the right switch!

Is it significant that the appliance is a table lamp?

    Yes

Not as extreme but you are thinking along the right lines. Remember you can only make one trip. Once you have left the first room there is no going back!

    Keep going folks!
