All Topics / Opinionated! / teachers salaries
The problems with most teachers is they go to school, then to uni, then back to school never actually seeing how “easy” it is in the normal workforce.
Early on the indoctrination by the socialist teachers federation begins and thus they feel hard done by through out their working careers.
Also Jason you forgot to mention the generous super entitlements that teachers recieve.
Change the teachers pay to a performance based system, this will weed out the crap teachers. But the teachers federation would never agree to this model as it will show how many teachers are not very good and the other dilemna is the good ones will get poached by the private system.
To conclude if the teachers in public school system are doing such a grand job why are students leaving for the private schools in droves?
I know three teachers and they have times they are very busy (marking midyr and end yr exams, but mostly they are overpaid, lazy and whingey.

I guess in any profession there are alway a good one and a bad one like accountant, doctor…..

[Keep going, you’re on your way to Frolic Freedom!]I think a basic salary + performance pay is the way to go for teachers. Good teachers should get higher pay.
There is a surge in the university entrance score this year for BE. It’s higher than many other courses. It’s just a case of demand/supply.
If teachers get a salary = doctors, one needs to achieve around 99.8% to get in. As the result our future children will be brilliant.

Teachers who think they are overworked and underpaid should leave the profession (I did after 15 years of it). I loved teaching but the increase in stress, curriculum changes for their own sake and bureaucracy killed it for me.
There are great teachers and there are duds- everyone knows this. Most teachers care for the kids and work quite hard- some are very lax.
Many feel they have no other options but teaching and have commitments and see their Superannuation looming.
We should focus on the quality of teachers and really support them in the classroom- but this means money not rhetoric and a real commitment from everyone in society.

To get a promotion , what counts is seniority, not ability !!
Many teachers are deadwood, not very capable, bludging, doing as little work as possible.
Then again, others are hard working and dedicated.
What about getting rid of the incompetent ones ?
Not incompetent ?
Who should we blame for the fact that so many pupils are virtually illiterate, unable to put simple sentences together ?
Yes, that was determined by studying university students !!!
Should the incompetent ones get a raise ? Absolutely not.
Does it make sense to have long holidays ?
Do you really think that teachers are the only ones who work under pressure ?
And as far as getting upset about the private shcools
being subsidised is concerned, the government couldn’t logistically handle taking over these schools’ work, nor, for that matter, fund the setting up costs.Pisces
Why are so many students illiterate? Perhaps parents need to take their share of the blame here. I see a young chap at my son’s school who is clearly struggling, however, despite the teachers advising that the chap needs additional help ie: the teacher would provide the exercies required. The parent is not intereted…. it’s too hard and not their job, they say. What can the teacher do, give the one studnet all her attention at the expense of the of 23 students, I think not. The teacher is certainly willing to help, but has to look after all students. I think parents have to take their fair share of responsibility as well.

Hi Pisces,
Western Australia has been using a full merit based selection process for the past 12 years. Promotion by seniority died a long time ago.
I also believe the other states use a merit based system too.

The bottom line is…
If teaching is so good, such fantastic wages, soooo good holidays blah blah blah
then WHY doesn’t everyone want to BE a TEACHER?????
Hmmmm
Stop whining about our holidays etc and go out, earn your degree and sign up!!!!!!!![]
I see that one of the States (either ACT or NSW I think) is wanting to offer scholarships to fellas only to try to get more blokes into the profession.
Looks like the parliament is not going to exempt them from the anti discrimination laws though so it won’t get through.
Cheers
