Vic: Govt to close first home owner grant loophole
Home (MELBOURNE)
The Victorian government will close a loophole which allows
parents to use their children to claim the first-home buyers grant.
Treasurer JOHN BRUMBY’s confirmed that almost 40 children, some
as young as 12 months old, have bought homes under the $7,000
federal government scheme which has no age limit.
Mr BRUMBY says it appears parents, who are ineligible for the
grant because they already own a home, have made an application in
the name of one of their children.
He says legislation will be introduced this week requiring
applicants be aged 18 and over.
The federally-funded scheme, which is administered by the state
governments, was introduced in 2000.
Mr BRUMBY says the South Australian and NSW governments are also
planning to crack down on people abusing the age-limit loophole.
