At the point in this conversation where I’ve typed perhaps, I have also been known to go off into a spiel about why negative gearing as a strategy is flawed, and totally bamboozle them. But I don’t like to be mean to people just doing their jobs. [

That’s funny! Just had another call last night during dinner. I said “Sorry I’m not interested in minimizing tax at the moment” She said ..”before you go can I ask why?” so I said ” Tax is the least of my problems at the moment. I’m not interested in property and I’m not interested in a free financial consultation as the time it takes to complete the consultation would be costing my husband 1 hr of his work. Thank you for having us in mind, maybe another time.”
Meanwhile the kids are throwing the vegetables onto the floor and husband has conveiniantly dissapeared from the kitchen…

Definitely annoying! I guess their just trying to make money. In fact I was offered a position as telemarketer (in last 2 weeks, I was headhunted by word of mouth) to call people informing them of a free consultation with a financial advisor and to make bookings. I told the couple (Sunday night) that although I was interested in working from home, I wasn’t comfortable asking people to trust in financial advisors I hadn’t personally met thereby I couldn’t possibly recommend them. Integrity is something you can’t buy and I couldn’t sell my conscience, knowing what I’ve been through with so called ‘financial advisors’.
In order to put myself through uni, I worked full time, studied part time and worked extra 2 casual jobs. I really don’t know how I did it then, but I did telemarketing and market research, worked as agency nurse etc I stopped when I was 8.5 months pregnant with my darling Phillip… If only I could juggle like that again. It was great money, but priorities change. I understand the reason for cold calling like that and in truth it is the best time to catch people.
I’ve lost a few tentacles since then and so I’ve decided to put the answering machine on at dinner time. [8D]
Please ignore my spelling mistakes as that is something no schooling has been able to cure me of.

Felicity, hope your nephew is fine… Phillip goes part time to Autistic school and is the darling of the school as he loves to flirt [:X] and hug his teachers.
I’m not sure if I mentioned this in one of my posts, but another telemarketer rang up from a property investing company and offered me a free Jan Somer’s book for half an hour of my time…
Well he could have been singing for all I cared. I just eyed the free book with glee. Hubby and I told him we were only interested in cash flow positive properties. He said they would be, by about $20 per month. I asked him, where the properties would be, his anser “Does it matter?” Well NO, it didn’t really matter, but if you are offering a Jan Somer’s book, wouldn’t you be following her guidelines, of buying within radius of approx 8-10km’s of CBD [?]
He promised to email or fax me facts and figures on how it was positive cash flow (using Somer’s software) and asked ME to call him, if I didn’t receive it. I never received the email or fax (didn’t think I would).
I haven’t got time to chase him up, making sure he’s doing his job!!! If he wants business he has to do his work, just like everyone else does.
Hubby, who can’t say ‘No’ to anybody (but me [:0)]) let this bozo harrass him for another 2 months, before finally I called ‘bozo’ and told him we couldn’t afford the finance due to financial difficulties. [}Cheers

About our nephew, well, I don’t actually know how he is any more, hubby’s family (parents and sister) have disowned us, we haven’t seen them in a lot of months now. Apparently they don’t like the fact that we think differently – we seem to think that life doesn’t have to be an endless battle to survive. So we must live in fairyland. Heaven forbid that any of that positive oulook should rub off on our nephews…Keep smiling

It would be better to put feelings aside and let the kids have enjoyment from having family members present. Sometimes when families have difficult or disabled children they go into ‘hibernation’ or stasis. Perhaps they will come out of it soon, when they realise that we all have shortcomings and we all have to make do with them and move on with life.

no, it’s got nothing to do with the family going into hibernation – apart from anything else, my nephew has grown out of his asperger’s to some extent (and controls it better now he’s older).
They just don’t like our approach to life! Mind you, there’s a history of this – this is the 3rd time the in laws have disowned us, although up until now it was only the mother-in-law, this is the first time my sister-in-law has joined in.
C’est la vie!
Personally I love fairyland. And I definitely think Quasimodo and his Esmeralda must live there… heheheKeep smiling
FelicityIt’s nice to know I have neighbours in Fairy land. I myself am regularly told by my clan that I live in Pixieland (which is just down the road from fairyland). It is interesting though now 1 year down the track with some successes under the belt how interested people can be. I try and buy books and share my books with my family but they more often than not reada little and find it too hard to shift their paradigm. What a shame. So many people with such potential out there who under use that potential. If only we all realised what we are capable of.

Albert EinsteinMost of the time when we are called by those offering a free seminar we ask if it involves negative gearing. Normally they say yes and we just say we’re not interested. However sometimes they do offer cheese and wine tasting as well as an investment seminar. My wife and I decide that we might make a night of it and have some cheese and bikkies and a few wines and sit in a seminar for an hour just to have listen. Cheap night out really
However we did have a consultant visit us once. He talked about getting a line of credit loan. We had already done that. Then using the equity in your house to buy IPs and we had already done that having 2 at the time. Once the consultant realised this, he at least stayed and asked lots of questions about owning IPs as he wanted to do what we were doing. Maybe we should have charged him
Another time after telling a telemarketer that he couldn’t help us buy IPs as the ones they offer wouldn’t qualify for our 11 second solution. He was pretty persistent but about 15 minutes after I finished talking to him, he rang back and agreed that he couldn’t help us as they were helping inexperienced property investors. I presume inexperienced is a euphemism for “know nothing”.

Now, another tip, if I can suggest… is when you find out the name of the company who is holding the seminar, ask for their web address. Many times the excuses I was given, was that the web site wasn’t completely set up yet or that some of the links where broken, it only had company profiles on it…etc etc. This all rang alarm bells. Some do have a very well established web site, so then have a look around, get familiar with their demographics, tenancy records etc etc.
Look at the suburbs they’ve selected and then compare that with median prices in the area. If you have to call independant realtors in the area to get price comparisons, do it! It’s the only way you will find out if you are getting a good deal.
If they don’t have a web site, wipe them off your list. Set out a criteria, which they have to meet if you are to give them your business. If either one or more of that criteria has not been met, a red line through that company is your best bet.What about the one stop shops. The talker, the banker and candlestick maker (okay, not quite!) but they have a financier, realtor, developer, chauffer, insurer all wrapped into one company. Therefore, you walk in, sit down with a financier, who determines how much you have to spend and how easy it will be to get finance, then he gives your details to the realator, who then finds the best developer for your price range AND THEN if you ask to see more expensive or cheaper properties, they say “We’ve already selected the best property for you”. Baaahhh, Bleeatt…like lambs to the slaughter! Then, the realator becomes your chauffuer, first stop the developer, with either the plans for the new complex, or the addresses they have of the ‘pick of the crop’ you see the property and they spiel you with it’s potential,(insert sarcasm here [
Whatever makes you happy. If going with a company gives you security, then do it. Afterall it’s only money [
