I lived in Tassie for a few years through work.  It is an interesting place with lots to offer.  The Mid – Northern part is pretty dull socially as many 20 -30 year olds move interstate for some action.  The bad suburbs are pretty close to the good ones as it is a small place.  I found it quite funny how the prices could double almost from one street to the next.  It is very rural in the mid -northern parts so culturally and diversity aren't great strenths of that part of the state.  Hobart is more like the rest of Australia and it makes sense that the rest of the state doesnt think there is anything worth seeing past Campbell Town heading South.  I disagree and think Hobart would be the place to settle.  It is relaxed, but has culture and diversity.  It is large enough to find your place without feeling the big city stress.  Downside to Hobart is it probably has the worst weather in the state where as say Launceston has 4 unbelievable nice summer months (but also about 6 horrible winter months).

Probably no help with suburbs, but I do think you need to fly down and have a look and decide if you want REAL rural life of a balance between the big smoke and a regional centre.  Jetstar and Virgin have good deals on direct flights from Bris to Launceston.  Rent a car and drive around for a couple of weeks. It does feel like you are stuck in the 80s in some ways – Not a lot of choice and not a lot happening, but great spot if you like the outdoors and things staying just the way the are.
