Marc,
Lucky I’m far away? More like your lucky to be afar away from me. On this topic, I don’t think your comments are at all valid as they are … not even worth thinking about…May god prosper you all? I am not so sure he has prospered you at all lately.
Steph.[evil4]Quote:Originally posted by Marc1:Yet the debate was on a different line, rather if STATUS is a measure of success.
The author made the absurd proposition that if it is, then success can be achieved by going to a society that is so low in comparative terms that we will achieve instant status and therefore instant success.
The author himself was disappointing, and how he pontificated that status and (in his opinion), success, is fuelled exclusively by comparison with others and therefore we do what we do to catch up with the Jones next door.

MARC, you really know how to Sh*t people. I, for you information, am a female, and if you had actually paid attention to my post you would have realised that I did not at all compare myself to the neighbours or what they have or that I need to keep up with them. I clearly stated, that I felt that I would like some of those things and if I was able to achieve them without putting myself into debt, that was MY PERSONAL SUCCESS!!!!You also took this whole topic off on a bizarre slant that I pontificated myself by comparing what I did to what others do. I HAVE NEVER AND WILL NEVER EVER compare myself to others. We all have our place in society and I specifically asked for the forumites to express their own personal views on what they feel THEIR success has been in their life.
Don’t EVER take my posts out of context so you can feel righteous and control the tone of the forum. You don’t have the right and I am sure others don’t appreciate it too.
Geez.. all this happening while I’m away in Perth…. Crickey…[blink]
On a lighter note, thank you to all those people contributing in a contructive manner and who understood where my post was suppose to go.

I agree with Purplekiss,
Why would you pay 12% on a personal loan, maybe 14% coz no security for it when you could fix your mortgage on about 7% for the next five years??I certainly would prefer to pay the scum bags at the bank less, not more… You would have heaps more flexibility when it comes to getting hold of the equity you have accumulated in the property, I dunno via redraw facility or something??
Have a think about the car situation… Would you really cope without one or would you be better off with a cheaper car to get you from A to B? You can get hold of some half reasonable cars for under $2000… I had one for 5 years with no probs! Cost me hardly a thing the whole time…

No worries Kay.
S’pose I just wanted to reinforce to people that you can be successful with your life with other things than money.I have a cool email called the Mayonnaise jar and a beer.
A professor stood up in front of a class and brought out a large mayonnise jar and filled it up with golf balls. He asked the class if it was full and the class agreed.
He then tipped a bag of small pebbles into the jar. The pebbles slipped past the golfballs and filled up the gaps in between. Again he asked the class if the jar was full and they agreed.
He then took a bag of sand and tipped it in. The sand filled the gaps between the pebbles and the golf balls. He asked the class if the jar was full. They agreed.
Finally he opened a can of beer and tipped it into the jar filling the jars space between all the other things. The class were silent.
He explained that the golf balls the were like the most important things in your life that you cannot live with out. Your family, your friends etc… With just them your life would proabably be full.
The pebbles represents your hobbies, school other things you do with your time for enjoyment. They add a dimension past your golf balls and help fill your life.
The sand is all the unimportant things that happen in your life. All it really does is fill in time or your gaps.
Then someone in the class spoke up. “Well, what’s the beer for?” The professor replied, “No matter how full your life gets, there is always room for a beer.”
Just remember your golf balls everyone and how important they really are to your life. If you lost everything and only had them left, I bet your life woud still be pretty full…

Wagerup, is that near those dodgy suburbs of Calista and Parmelia at all? If it is or close by, they are seriously feral down that way. I didn’t think it was possible but I bought a car from down that way and dad pulled over to grab a wrench out to hang on to while driving…. Hmmm….

Exmouth,
The last thing I remember of it was watching the houses go past in the back of an ambulance… I saw that most of the houses had dirty big slabs of concrete on their roofs to keep them down during a cyclone.Lovely place to visit, but not so sure about living there. Lots of tourist opportunities but not too sure about sustainable job factors outside that Gorgon prospect…

Rebecca2,
It is such a shame you have had that experience with your sons teachers… It is disgusting behaviour to call a student names. I wouldn’t put up with it at all!I agree with you that all people that become teachers should get out there and get some real world experience before going to the classroom. I took two years off from Uni and the classroom purposely as I didn’t want to be a teacehr that was sheltered at school my whole life.
Working outside the education system was an absolutely fabulous life skill I obtained. Plus I learnt how to dodge Mobile phones being thrown by angry customers…
It made me see how people deal with life and it helped me be more empathetic to situations that may happen at home as I saw it from a different point of view.
Rebecca, MARCH INTO THAT SCHOOL AND LODGE A FORMAL COMPLAINT ABOUT THE TEACHER/S INVOLVED! Do not let them get away with it. Even if they get a slap on the wrist, it may make them think about doing again… Just make sure you have your sons story straight first and maybe get another childs story too. (Not saying your sons story wont be truthful, but you know how children can be spiteful sometimes…)
Cheers

Ted, I’m not too sure giving them a whack would be the answer as these days it just isn’t a threat to them. The kids know their rights too well and would be quick to have lawyers up at the school. (If you honestly don’t believe it, DO! Coz it happens…)
I dunno, It’s such a shame that in todays society we have people who believe they are owed something. I mean, yes some teachers as you meantioned Superted, are motivated by holidays and money and are really crap, but the system is slowly weeding them out.
I will be the first to admit that I will not be in teaching forever. I will always have some contact in a school via either relief teaching or a part time job, but I certainly do not wish to work fulltime as a teacher for a great deal longer.
Political correctness is rather tiresome but I have to admit, at the school I’m currently at, it really isn’t a problem. It’s kinda strange… Maybe it’s a magical school….
Oh yeah superted, if you do the right thing by your kids and give them the time they desire, I doubt you would even have to consider sending the future children of yours to a whacking school…
Ohand Pelican, I didn’t mean anything about the shaping bit directly at you. It isn’t really a great word for someone outside the family to use to describe their influence on another child. Jus tme being pernickety.

Oh yeah, superted, you said it baby, money can’t go with us to the after world, can it?
Spend within your means and enjoy your life and others lives around you too.

Aww cheers guys.. makes me wanna cry.. I’m not one of a kind though. I have a whole school of people like me that experience the same things. I believe it is the reinforcing of values (admittedly Christian values) that is what guides me to helping these children. As some of you know, I teach in a Catholic school and it is totally different from the government system.
People gave john Howard crap for saying our public schools were lacking in values and he hit the nail on the head. what he failed to say was that families are forgetting to impress their own values on their children as well and are too quick to pass the buck on to the school.
I personally believe that most teachers are not in the profession for the money. I certainly am NOT! And most teachers are not in it for the holidays, for if you know a teacher or two, they actually spend at least half od the holidays plannig for the next term! I don;t really give a crap about what I get paid as long as it is reasonable for someone with the responsibility of nurturing childrens futures. NOTE I didn’t say shape childrens futures. BIG DIFFERENCE! Teachers who say they shape children are rubbish. All we should do is help the child work out things for themselves and maybe push them in the right direction if they lose the track.
I would still like to feel successful in the property investing world and outside of school so don’t you worry! I still have issues outside school about my success! I am just glad one part of my life is a little balanced and I am getting rewarded for it everyday.

I want it! I want it! I want it NOW!!!!
Whatever happened to the saying “I want never got”? I tell that to the kids here at school all the time. Anything they do they have to earn it.
But as someone pointed out earlier, it is easier to shut them up thatn to talk to them. Shame parents or carers don’t talk to their children as much anymore… poor things are growing up really socially inept.[angry2]
Ho hum… Americanism. I have never liked the American style or what they stand for and I never really will. They would die for their country readily enough but more people are probably killed via fire arms in their own country! They scoff at Australia for making semi-automatic firearms illegal, but all they are hiding behind is a two hundred year old constitution that goes back to the cowboy era that they have the right to bear arms! Absolute bullshit! I am just glad Aus isn’t gun crazy like they are…

Hi guys, this thread kinda relates to the one I put in Opinionated about success.
SBS’ insight program was talking about it and how ppl do feel like they need all those things to feel successful. Its a shame really. I mean as much as I would love lots of lovely things, I am prepared to wait for them and work towards them.
At school we are doing an interesting bit on the emotional brain. It has different rooms etc according to your emotions (Duh…hence the name…). At the bottom of the poster it has something along these lines. Bum, I can’t think of it, I’ll add to this msg when I get to school…..[baaa]I’ll Be back!

Perth Perth Perth…. I love that city. Sigh….
I don’t actually miss living Though.
Ummm, People have named some quite good suburbs but have forgotten the north eastern suburbs from Morley pushing out to the swan valley. Some of those are relatively new and others old but still have excellent access to everything.
I’m still a Morley advocate through and through though. Still fairly affordable and with ok sized block that can be redeveloped if needed. Otherwise you usually get a half decent built 70’s style house. A very family orientated area.
I just really like the recycling system they have in the City of Bayswater… Wish we had that up here. I feel really bad not recycling so much. No real recycling facilities here. Ho hum…

oops, sorry, I think I lost my point there. [baaa] I mean, termites might not be a big problem to some if they have the right connections of skills to be able to deal with the problem. Whereas other people would find it an overwhelming prospect to replace a beam in the roof.
It gets down to everyones situation and making sure you look at your own situation and think logically. Ask yourself if you took it on, whether you could fix it without any major dramas through your own trade skills or perhaps mates rates from others you know, or whether you would be biting off more than you can chew.
We have found the pest inspector the real estate ppl recommend to be sufficient.
Good luck with your venture!

yeah I dunno,
Like PK says, it depends on the damage and they were eradicated. Personally I like buying cars that need new engines coz then I know because I have fixed it, it will last the distance. I never buy a car with a good engine but a crap rusty body…. Kinda relates to real estate… i think….hmmmmm…..Success is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.
ohhh, where do I start….?
* Parents that expect their children to be valued citizens of society yet believe the education system can provide it for htem and that the childrens behaviour has absolutley nothing to do with the fact that the kids watch their parents drink themselves into oblivion, smack up their partners, choot up in the kitchen or just plain ignore the child. Naaahhh, that’s got nothing to do with the fact that their child bashes up other children as a cry for attention.Grrrr… don’t get me started…. People having children should really have a bloody license…

Derek, as much as I use the multiple intelligences theory from gardner and blooms taxonomy for questions, I don’t think it is really that relevant to studying. It is hard enough to comprehend when putting it into practise than to study that as well as the course too!
As much as i value that theory, I really can’t see it helping someone study. It is more for someone planning something than studying something.
Cheers

I like the response from whoever that said get your parents to live with you! My mum’s mum lives with her and dad and it has it bonuses. Also, if you are contemplating a bub, perhaps to chip in for rent, if wifey still wants to work part time, ur parents could babysit/child care?
It would save you a heck of a lot of money and the child has active grand parents involved. Sit down together and run through every available avenue and come up with pros and cons for each of them. Do also seek proper financial advice and maybe just ahve a sticky beak at the suburbs either side of your dream suburb to see if it is more affordable/liveable.
good luck.

geez there are some real twats around aren’t there?
Thanks to all who have shared, it has made me realise to not leave ANY stone unturned when it comes to IP’s.
Dear oh dear… Oh yeah, it’s just like that case of the bloke who was drunk at a pub, he walked out on to the street and got hit by a car. He sued the pub for letting him get too drunk, but apparently the staff reckon he didn’t look or sound drunk. I know that feeling coz my husband is a little like that. Holds his alcohol fairly well even when he is pretty smashed… Unfortunately the drunk got paid out some phenomenal amount of money, again showing up the legal system as a bunch of money grabbing leeches.
It makes me angry these days, when people cannot accept their own behaviour had something to do with how they live their life. We live in a time of blame and its sad to see that everyone has to be careful because of the other twits int he world who know how to rort the system.
My 2c….
