OK, I don’t have the intention of tormenting people, like somebody you might remember [biggrin] in the past on these boards did who had an ongoing definition-debate (I think it was of banks in this case) hehe…but I always thought the definition of Retirement was closest to this one I found:
Withdrawal from one’s occupation, business, or office. It’s OK to say that you’re semi-retired if you are, but people I have noticed say that they’re retired if they’re just changing jobs, or starting their own business.
OK you can retire from your job, but you don’t retire from the workforce when you still go on working in a different field.
I would call that ‘a career change’ or something, not ‘retirement’.Celivia
It is not clear to me what people on here mean when they say they are or are going to retire.
To me retirement means to stop working, live on income from your retirement fund, or other income put aside for your retirement, and never work again for income.
Retirement means to do the things you like, such as travel, spending your day relaxing, having fun, socialising, etc.
Anything except working for an income.Starting your own business is still working, and working hard in most cases.
I don’t see that as retirement at all.Could anybody who runs their own business just say that they retired?
No, not in my opinion.Celivia
MJT, I follow the same steps as Kay Henry.
I wouldn’t dream of signing a contract without having my solicitor going over it first. I sit down with my solicitor, she discusses it with me, then I sign.Celivia
It depends on where you want to buy.
Most people can only afford to buy one unit or appartment at a time if they want to buy near the CBD in a capital city.

Hehe e x, perhaps it’s time to go cold turkey for a while [biggrin].

I used to have a preference for house/land, but lately I have developed a love for units as well.
There are many pro’s and con’s for both I think.
There is an article in the August API magazine, “Keeping up with the latest trends” in where they talk about the moving trend- more and more people prefer to live in high-rise units, especially near the CBD of capital cities.

I think Clason’s book was a really interesting read.
Re saving: If I remember correctly, the advice given on saving by the Richest Man in Babylon was very simple: Spend no more than 90% of what you earn.
Invest the 10% you save.Celivia
Niki, thanks for this thread.
There are so many success stories on here, that it sometimes can give people the idea that property investing is all roses.
It is eye-opening for some of us to hear that things can go all wrong, too.
Please let us know how things are turning out for you.

You might like to contact the Department of Housing to assist you.
Their website is http://www.housing.com.au – it says their website is under development right now, so you might need to contact them in another way.

Marisa, I would never want to manage my own property.
I like the “hands off” style. In another thread I said that I find communication with my PM really important.
I told my PM exactly what I need, want and expect of them and asked if they’d be able to comply.
I also contact them regularly for a chat (not TOO regularly)So far I’ve had no problems and I’m very happy with the way things are done.

The name John Donjerkovic sounds familiar.
Maybe he is/was a participant of Steve’s MAP?
Not sure, but I’ve heard it somewhere…[confused2]Celivia
But can’t there be different kinds of heroes?
There can be sports heroes, medical heroes, political heroes, etc.
If there are different ‘categories’ of heroes, then there is no need to judge and compare. We can have as many heroes as we like, just in different categories. And all can have a special place in our society.

I think it will stand out well on the shelves with those eye-catching colours.
I assume the same colours continue on the spine?[book]
Any date and time set for the book launch yet, so I can keep that time free?

Yes, really funny about the Happy Clappers.
I hope they won’t clap too hard though or the mine might cave in! [blink] [fear]

To love, be happy, and have fun in life as much as possible.

I think a hero can be someone who achieved something special, something worthwhile.
I’d like to call the athletes heroes/heroines because they have achieved so much through extreme hard training and I admire their strength of mind and body.Athletes can be regarded as role models for our children as well.
And hehe, if the main character in a novel can be called a hero, an Olympic athlete should surely be worthy of being called a hero/heroine. [biggrin]

MarkyMarkHi Marky
All my income from my property is credited to my LOC, and all outgoings debited from the same LOC.
Any repairs/maintenance is done by my PM so they just add that to the outgoings.
This has been automatically set up so I don’t even have to look at it.[blink]
I do quickly check it over monthly when my property manager’s statement and LOC bankstatements come in, to see if they match. Then I fling the lot (I mean file hehe) into a drawer till taxtime.
Works well for me!Celivia
HAHAHA Yack, too funny!
Why don’t we all pack our boogieboards/ surfboards and snorkles and take off for some fun!
Who can bring a beachboys CD?We should do some research on the ground- but not under the ground as in: sticking our heads into the (mineral) sand. biggrin] [baaa]

Markymark, I am receiving all of the above (rental statements, receipts, newsletter etc).
I have to agree with Kay- that communication is really important. Tell them how you’d like to do things.I told my pm that I want no stress, and given them a limit of $200 for small repairs. So I don’t even have to know about repairs till they’re done and show up on my statement. Any repairs/maintenance above this amount will have to be approved by me first.
It works really well and they never bother me with small stuff.I have stayed with the RE office that sold me the property, and this office is run by a wife/husband team, in where the husband handles the sales and the wife the PM department.
