If you go through one of the big hire-car companies, I have found that their cheapest rates are usually offered to RACV (or equivalent) members, or otherwise Frequent Flyers. All you have to do is give them your member number.
Shop around too. We hired a car for eight days in September and there was a substantial price difference between the different companies. We chose Hertz in the end and were very pleased.
As for accommodation, check out http://www.ratestogo.com.au and http://www.wotif.com.au You can book up to about three weeks in advance.
Thanks everyone for all your positivity and stories!!
JoD, I didn’t mean to start this topic, it just *happened* one day when I had had enough!! I had to vent somewhere, and no one else seems to ‘get it’!! So here I came and let loose… I still hear “you’re mad” and I agree, it’s upsetting when you are quite serious about something, however Matt is also spot on in what he says about needing devil’s advocates. I don’t have an informed devil’s advocate so I just hang out here more these days. [biggrin]
As for the worst case scenario Calder, I wouldn’t commit to something in the first place if I couldn’t handle the worst case scenario, so I guess this is why the prospect of investing does not daunt me. With the help of a whole lot of forumites I am learning to believe in my own better judgement and hope to soon act on it.
Thanks all for being a wonderful bunch. It is inspiring and motivating to hear from you!
Cheers,

So do you Redwing!! [biggrin]
Thanks Simon. You are a champ. [smiling]

Thanks so much Geo and Simon!
Simon, you are not raining on my parade, you are helping me get my thinking straight! I did not consider the topic wording much but you are absolutely right. It is not an IP. Hadn’t really considered it one but it is still a dwelling of sorts and I guess that is what made me call it an IP! I have been corrected, and now all is good. [biggrin]
As for treating it like a business, are you suggesting that I get an ABN and hire it out? Can you elaborate on the management technique you had in mind? Sorry to ask what are probably very basic questions… [blush2]
Cheers,
Ali G
People are going to say this is rubbish but I promise you I have seen it work many times:
Turn upside down and bang gently on the back of the keyboard so all the ‘stuff’ that falls in there falls back out. Remove all of the keys. Dunk the whole thing in a sink full of water and ‘swish’. Let it dry out thoroughly. Put the keys back. Hey presto! New keyboard. [biggrin]
Oh, you don’t have time to do this? Just buy a new one then… not too pricey, as Derek said.
Cheers,
Ali G
PS. I take no responsibility for any infra-red keyboards killed in the above manner. Only advisable to kill and resuscitate the older style keyboards. [biggrin]
Hi Simon!
Thanks for your reply.
Sorry to be vague, but how do you mean ‘treat it as a business rather than a property investment’? What would I do differently?
Cheers,
Ali G
Hi drady,
Welcome to the forum!
We had a discussion on this only a matter of days ago. Take a look at this thread https://www.propertyinvesting.com/forum/topic/13380.html?SearchTerms=bird,dog and then if you are still confused by all means post another question.

On the note of auctions, bjmaca, you don’t have to buy ALL of your furniture there and thus end up with a ‘mish mash’ as Derek put it (!) but you could pick up a few items that fit in nicely with what you have planned. Just because it is cheap or second hand it doesn’t mean it is crap!! [biggrin]
Cheers,
Ali G
Not sure what the situation is in or near Port Macquarie, but I know in Melbourne that you can pick up great furniture at excellent prices from auction houses. Often they will auction off all of the furniture from a hotel that is being refurbished. That means they may have 100-200 identical items eg. entertainment units at rock bottom prices. With that many to choose from you are bound to pick up items that are in pretty good condition. A guy I know just picked up 15 desk lamps (quite trendy looking with a high and low setting) for $20 for the lot! He thought it was $20 for one when he was bidding!!!
Certainly something to consider!

Hi Bizibee,
Welcome to the forum. [biggrin]
You have come to the right place! Spend a few hours on here reading through the different threads. Use the search function to search for any topics you may be particularly interested in. If you have any questions (no matter how basic you may think they are), if you can’t find the answer by all means post them right here!
All the best!

Hi Darls,
If you are having fun playing around with some formulae you may also be interested in Jaffasoft’s calculators. You can find them at:

If it were not for this site, Steve’s first book (yet to read the second) and the many generous forumites that post here also (they also deserve a ‘thank you’) I would not have any where near the understanding of property that I have now. I still have a long way to go – lots of nitty gritty to learn – but I feel that this is a good place to do a lot of that. Thank you Steve, but also everyone else, for assisting me in my learning journey.
Cheers,
Ali G
Good stuff investron! Just goes to show how much persistence pays off!

Congrats Redwing!! Hope you are getting some sleep!! [bigeyes][bigeyes]

Despite all the wonderful places in the world to see, I agree with you 100% thecrest. We live in the best country in the world. And yes, I am biased. [biggrin]

The thing is, that everyone’s ideas and opinions are acceptable so long as they are not forced upon anyone. My opinions included.

Ooooooooooohhhh!!! SO MUCH TO SAY!!
But what is that saying “never discuss religion or politics”??
I was discussing the election result with a close friend last week and despite the logic I kept repeating he would not acknowledge it!!! That’s when I thought to myself “ah, I know where that saying comes from now”. I have similar discussions with him about religion also, and we can’t even agree to disagree!!!
So if I can’t sort it out with a close mate I better bow out now on this thread!!
Cheers,
Ali G
Originally posted by MortgageHunter:Seriously, I know what you mean. I loved backpacking through South East Asia – especially Cambodia and Laos. I plan a trip to India sometime when I can find time.
I actually had India in mind when I wrote that post. Simon, you must MAKE the time to go. It is a truly amazing country. It is a real eye opener and a total reality check. Even if you declare that you are not going there for a spiritual experience you will have one anyway!! The generosity of the people is what stays with me most. And if you do it on the cheap (ie. $2 hotels – the way to go!) when you get back you will appreciate the simple things in life, like having your mouth open under the water in the shower. You feel totally at ease when you return because the concerns you have here are put into perspective.
And you will never forget the experience.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

Simon, need more information… are you just a really optimistic kind of guy or do you have a deluxe beachfront pad and a live-in chef?? [biggrin]
To me there are two types of relaxing holidays:
1) The kind of place you go to to sit on the beach and do nothing eg. the Whitsundays, Port Douglas, etc.
2) The kind of place you go to when you want to be energised and recharged eg. South East Asia, third world countries. Sometimes the most relaxing of holidays are those that put you out of your comfort zone as when you get back to ‘reality’ at home it all just seems so easy…
