Hi there, we are renovating our home which currently has varnished jarrah doors, frames and skirting boards throughout. For me it makes the house feel very old fashioned and “dark” but my partner says the opposite, and probably because of the work involved to sand off all the varnish by hand before painting. I am also conflicted because it is a beautiful wood and a shame to paint over it. However, in my opinion, the house will improve in value and feel brighter and newer if all the trims and doors are painted white.

    Do you agree?

    thanks
    Michelle

    Hi Michelle,

I am in exactly the same boat. I want to paint for all the reasons you stipulate but hubby doesn’t – he likes the timber look which I feel is outdated and of course the workload to sand it all back will not be fun.

I notice you haven’t had any replies which is a shame and you posted this back in January. I’m keen to know what you decided to do and if you did paint, would you mind sharing your experience please? Any tips on what products to use to make the job as easy as possible?

    Many thanks
    jussi
