During WW2 the Japanese experimented with fire balloons that were set adrift with the intention of drifting across the Pacific to the US mainland where they would cause havoc. That strategy was predicated on known (at the time) wind drift patterns. Those same patterns are dispersing airborne radiation from Fukushima. A research report now indicates the dangers that this radioactive drift is causing to the western seaboard of the US
Throw in pollution from China's toxic air and the western seaboard hardly seems the place to be. Then we have the contamination of the marine environment to add to the toxic air scenario.
I wonder how long it will take the populace to figure out that living the California dream might well end up being the new California nightmare and pick up sticks and move somewhere safer like the east coast.
3/30/12 Fukushima Radiation Plume Hit Southern and Central California
The Journal Environmental Science and Technology reports in a new study that the Fukushima radiation plume contacted North America at California “with greatest exposure in central and southern California”, and that Southern California had 2,500 Bq/kg of iodine-131 in seaweed … over 500% higher than other tests in the U.S. and Canada: "Projected paths of the radioactive atmospheric plume emanating from the Fukushima reactors, best described as airborne particles or aerosols for 131I, 137Cs, and 35S, and subsequent atmospheric monitoring showed it coming in contact with the North American continent at California, with greatest exposure in central and southern California. Government monitoring sites in Anaheim (southern California) recorded peak airborne concentrations of 131I at 1.9 pCi m−3. Anaheim is where Disneyland is located.
On the upside, we've been seeing some delightful condo units and even holiday houses, at very attractive prices in and around Niigata, just west of Fukushima, and even as far as Hokkaido, to the far North. If a getaway home on the slopes was always your dream, now could be a good time – providing you're not bringing the lil' ones with ya, and are over 55 (Mod, this is meant as a joke, not advertising Real listings though.)
I was reading something the other week about and background radiation was mentioned. I had always thought background radiation was a naturally occurring event. Not so apparently. Background radiation only came in to being as a result of discharging atmospheric nuclear bombs, the first were in 1945.
The authenticity of pre 1945 wines is tested by looking for the radiation signature of the wine. None means they are authentic pre 45 wines.
I suppose Fukushima and its radiation isotopes will mark another time in our history.
