Can anybody help?
Are there any carpenters out there, or developers who can comment on rough pricing to lay some decking:
- spotted gum
- include labour costs
- timber posts
- sand and polish
- price per square metre inc GST.
- assume no problem in access, and flat garden space.
My builder has quoted me on a variation document. Even without the builder's admin margin, the price is in my opinion is really high. just wanting to get some comparisons.

Just get comparative quotes. Beware the really cheap quote. Rule of thumb if the trady checks out is take the middle quote. I tend to go for the smaller building businesses and those that specialise. Once you've figured out who you might go with make a counter offer, ie if it say $6000 then Knock $350 off that and it yours.. that kinda thing.
Sand and polish??? Old decks you might do this.. new one???
Meter rates vary big time so they're not a good guide
Quantify and price (trade rate if possible) the materials yourself. It'll give you a rough idea of the margin
If you settle on a trady and the price still seems high ask for reference jobs that you can view. I don't mind paying for good workmanship.

the job has been done, as a variation – and the price was a lot more than I expected. (Yes should have checked price before going ahead…) You're right I should call some tradies and get some firm quotes, was just hoping there might be some out in the forum that may be able to quote me per square metre as a rough comparison.
