Hi Guys, I've just started researching property investments but wanted to know which mag to subscribe to. There's three all costing about ten bucks. API, SPI and YIP. Any thoughts? feedbcak? cheers.
I like API the best. You can get them from your local library if you don't have the cash. At my library you can't borrow the new ones for 2 weeks? I used to go to the library and sit and read them each month before I subscribed. It's great to borrow some older ones too. There are great stories about other peoples stories which gives you ideas of different strategies. Mind you some of them, I think aren't startling. I think they are scraping for stories sometimes. Like 2 people that bought 3 properties that are negatively geared with little equity.
hey IG welcome to the forum, I was in your situation trying to work out what mag to subscribe to, after 2 years I have worked out the best ones out there – in my view anyway.
YIP – I subscribed to paper version and found this to be great for in depth answers in property and a few more analytical statistics in the back then SPI and API, My paper subscription is now up and I subscribed to Ipad version. Ipad version is great as in the research section you can sort all stats by postcode,alphabetical, yield, capital growth in descending order, so much quicker than trying to look through the magazine. also articles in the ipad can be archived and saved for later reference, great little mag, saves carrying around 5 issues aswell, can be weighty in airport luggage.
API – never subscribed and probably wont to be honest I get it for free from my sister working in an airport lounge, I found a lot of there articles revolve around so called hotspots that seem to change on a monthly basis, i found this annoying and very confusing. They did however have a lot of renovation tips and ideas that I liked but thats about it. they also do a ipad version but nowhere near as good as YIP.Research in the back is similar to YIP but a few less stats i believe.
SPI – a fairly new magazine to join the property section and so far from what I have seen its pretty good. Very simple wording and factual evidence in all their stories and articles, I will probably subscribe to this as I like that its not overrun by ad’s and they have some valuable in depth analysis of certain areas and suburbs. again they have a research section in the back but its pretty simplistic figures. Unsure whether they do an ipad version.
All in all i’d say value for money is the Ipad version of YIP especially at only $6 an issue. more bang for your buck.
I dont really use magazines for research, you will find most of the best info in forums like this one and also some of the area brochures developers offer have some good stats on certain suburbs. RPdata is really good too which ill probably be signing up to soon as i Zoom in on my area.

I'm biased – I do a fair bit of writing for API so they get my vote.
I also think there's more content rather than advertising in comparison to some of the others – particuarly YIP. I could be wrong but that's my general perception.
I like the API databank as well – very handy.

Is there a particular mag that is specific to Melbourne, Victoria? Sometimes I skip through the articles in API which talk about interstate property as that is not what I’m interested in.
Im a big fan of YIP mainly because i was in it
and they always change the stories and articles up a bit so its not repetitive but i did used to get API years ago but found it overly repetitive mainly with the growth suburbs and cashflow articlesa. Haven't had a good look at SPI yet. Hope this helps Tony Fleming | Triumphant Property Group

Thanks for all the feedback guys…i seem to have graviatetd to SPI…alot of API is very indepth and hard for me as a newcomer to get to grips with. YIP is ok but i don't feel much research and love goes into it. From my little expereince SPI seems to sit in the middle, easy to read but well researched. They also have the best site…www.spionline.com.au – i might keep reading all three for a couple more months to get a better understanding and then see who gets my hard earned money! :o)
I subscribe to all three but, SPI is the new comer I think its better than YIP and API. SPI has its own investment properties which they do follow up stories on.
Like Jamie i have a leaning towards API because i have appeared in it on several ocassions and they managed to do wonders with my photo (took out all the grey bits).
I enjoy reading all of them but wouldnt ever rely on any magazine to do my due diligence solely.
