newbie here ,,I have read a report that suggests that there will be new mine going in the Alpha area, anyone know about this location?
Alpha is approximately 1.5 hours west of Emerald. In the last floods most of this town went under water so it is an area to be careful about. There are some high spots in the area and values have rocketed since the mine announcement. Caould I suggest you visit the area

most will be housed in camps and FIFO
Initially 15% will live in Emerald, with expectations of this to grow as bus in bus out becomes a more family friendly option. They will need accommodation in alpha, however this will be specific and wont be as easy as buying a run down house and getting $1500 per week for it.
Hi FT,
There are a number of things to be aware of before you jump into mining areas, the least of which is to be one step ahead of the economy, which is a very hard task in itself. An interesting article is here from Mr Yardney

You can still get houses in emerald/blackwater for under 300k I don’t know about you but buying a ppor so you can earn 100k+ sounds like not to bad of an idea, its not always at it seems on the surface.

http://ppiqldtour.blogspot.com/2011/08/apples-with-apples-and-oranges-with.htmlI was visiting Blackwater around 16 months ago and the locals were talking about new mines starting up close to Alpha. Rental shortages are huge over there. Town is only supported by mining so too risky in my opinion.

The Hancock coal mine in Alpha has recieved approval today.

Alpha mine approved one day, knocked back the next.
Now the rail corridors have been decided on by Qld Gov, will this be knocked back as well ?
Go get um Campbell ! !
In regards to the suspension of the Alpha project, Tony Burke, Fed enviro minister, has stated that he wants more information pertaining to potential reef damage from runoff. While most of us obviously are not privy to the details of what information is available on the subject, or to how diligent the studies have been, the premise that comprehensive information should be submitted seems reasonable, The shame of the situation, it seems to me, is that once again the governments of this country have failed to communicate and work together in the joint interest of all involved. Before announcements of this scale, with the inherrent potential impacts are announced, surely all interested and involved parties should come to consensus. Instead we have one level of government make a grand announcement, only to have another nullify it, then the first make another related big announcement, and now we wait to see what damage the federal government will follow up with. We can obviously expect more insults and political threats to follow. No wonder business and investor confidence is low. What a pathetic circus.
Here's a link outlining some of the offsets which have been required to compensate for enviromental damage expected from the Gladstone LNG projects.

This is a late proposition after the recent banter between Fed and state Government over the approvals process.
I think this one has come in too late.
Campbell's work is complete !

GVK managing director of coal and infrastructure is quoted as saying the Alpha Project remains viable. Time will tell whether or not the project goes ahead on schedule. In the current climate, it would be a huge boost for confidence in the region. The managing director says discussions are well advanced with commercial banks re finance, and construction could start mid 2013. If true, there's less than a year to go until we see concrete evidence. Some further progress with rail approvals will be required first. I'm sure any coal miners concerned about the current low coal prices impacting job security would be relieved to know a project of this magnitude was underway. No doubt if it proceeds real estate prices in the sleepy little town of Alpha will escalate. Potential high reward but definite high risk there. Emerald will also benefit if the project proceeds, without the risk of investing in a one horse town.

I hadn't heard of the Alpha mine and the area before reading this post. Which state is Alpha located anyway?
Hey Mattsa
Alpha is in the Gallile Basin, inland from the Bowen and Surat Basins. There are HUGE untapped coal deposits there. There are several large scale projects on the drawing boards, all requiring new rail and water supplies. There are several different proposals for rail to ports, including Gladstone, Mackay and Abbot Point. BIG, BIG things will happen here eventually. LNG gas companies are also very interested in the area. Where there's coal, there's gas, and there's a lotta coal in the Gallilee!
