Can anyone suggest any cost saving tips on any construction methods? Particularly the roof?

Eg: Is there a construction method / pitch/ materials/ standard beam lengths/ any thing else???  that could be helpful in reducing costs?

I have recently read an American book that refers to the strategy of building to suit "standard" sizes and methods as "value engineering". Very interesting read. It now has me posing the question: What tips can reduce costs? (on a brand new home)

Eg: Clustering wet areas/ using "standard" pre-cut timber lengths to reduce waste/…………any more??

Less valleys the better, also less problems you will have later on.keep gutters to the outside of building  none of this butterfly roof crapo or box gutters, 22 degree roof pitch (easiere to walk on the better.Mainly the less valleys the better ,as ridges are easier to cut in.Big flat roofs are the best with no angle cuts.
