I am wondering if anyone knows a way that must force a dummy bidder to expose themselves?
For example, is there a question that can be asked (Der, like:”Are you a dummy bidder”??) that they must legally answer correctly??
Or is there some other way they can be picked out that anyone knows of??I generally find they are either ;
(a) Wearing sunglasses if it’s hot
(b) Wearing a trench coat if it’s cold
(c) Or sometimes the really tricky auctioneers pull the dummy bids from the nearest tree, or if inside, from the back curtain.I’ve attended many, but neither bought nor sold at auction and probably never would…don’t like the tactics and smoke and mirrors involved.
Just once, that’s all it would take, I’d like those sycophant agents to crawl up and whisper in my ear during the bidding as they always seem to do to hapless bidders…what an earful I’d give both them and the circus ringleader up the front.
I reckon give up, you’ll never outsmart the dodgy auctioneer and his/her all singing all dancing charade and move onto a proper sale method.
Hi Misty1
I dont know of any questions you can ask but there are a few things to consider.
Have an idea in mind of what the property is worth.
Set a limit.
Dont get emotional over the property as you could end up paying too much.
Pick the best position to stand in so you can see the crowd. This is usually the spot to the left of the auctioneer, facing the crowd. The REA’s will not like you being there but you are able to see who is bidding. From the position you pick to stand, you should be able to see if a tree is bidding.
Practise a few times by going to auctions in your area, before you go to one that you would like to bid at.
If you stick to local auctions, you may start to reconise faces and from there, you may be able to pick a dummy bidder. (i.e a regular bidder that never seems to buy) This could just be a developer who walks away when the bid is over his perceived value of the property, or a dummy bidder.
It may or may not work as dummy bidders could be a friend of the owner unknown to the auctioneer.Hope this helps
Cheers
