Does anyone know any websites or other ways where I can find whether their is an oversupply of rental accommodtaion in a particular town or suburb apart from looking up realestate.com.au and seeing for myself what is avaialble

You may want to check with the relevant Real Estate Institute in the state you are looking at. Or you can do it the old fashioned way, ring up agents pretending to be a tenant and see what you can find out from that.

I have found that some real estate agents publish useful reports, eg Herron Todd White. This is useful for showing whether there is oversupply. Also has other interesting market info.

If you were interested in vacancy rates, which is the demand aspect, you could check out Gov publications.
