Can anyone tell me how i could get any info about a business owners’ surname, address, & financial status? I have current business ABN & co. name, & have done searches on those, but the info avail is very limited.
The situation is someone owes me money, & i fear they are going to run, &/or cry broke. Short of putting out a contract on the guy, what can i do to find out more about him (I was given false details). Have any of you had to chase money? How did you get it back?[angry2]If the business is a sole trader or partnership do a business names search with the state authority. I think in NSW it’s the Department of Fair Trading
If it’s an incorporated company do a search with ASIC.
You may be able to get information from the Land Titles Office as to what properties are held in the name of the idividual or company
If you have done those steps then your legal means are to issue a summons, once you get judgment you can get them examined as to assets, tax returns etc.
Hi Misty,
Okay, you’ve done the easier one about the company search, and the information is not current.
I have an old copy of a CD from the National Phone Directory. You may like to check if you can obtain an up-to-date version, then do a search on the phone numbers that you have to see if you can locate current name and address details.
Then, if this person has defaulted on other bills, they may have a record of Court Summons and Judgement actions against the company. From those records, you will find their name and address details. I don’t know if this information is online on the Internet. You used to have to leg it to the Courthouse and enquire at the counter.
Heaven forbid that they might already be bankrupt! Check with ITSA (Insolvency and Trustee Service) in your State.
The last option costs more money. Contact Dun & Bradstreet or other collection agencies, such as George Laurens, and tell them you want a credit check on this company. They will tell you if you have to subscribe for a full year or can pay for just one credit check.
If they are passing around bad cheques, the CIB might know about them for fraudulent conversion, so contact your local Police Station.
There’s a few options to get you started!

Sometimes the generosity of everyone offering their time & info (for free[biggrin]) on this site gives me the warm fuzzies.I’d like to say yet another big thanks for your advice/s!
So,thanks,i will follow this advice,& i’ve learnt a very valuable & expensive, lesson.just another qu: How do i find out operators contact details of a Trust fund??
Use a debt collection agency and keep your hands clean! You will lose a percentage though, but perhaps it is worth it to get someone else to do the running around. To delegate it.
You are already mentioning things like ‘short of putting a hit on this person’ – which sounds to me a teensy bit ‘consumed’ by the matter.
joke or no joke?
Well, if someone ‘joked’ about putting a hit on you would you find it funny?I feel your pain but I remind you that we are innocent until proven guilty. Then again people can be SLACK about paying so go hire a professional. and quit worrying.
cheers-
