The situation in Tasmania is a paradox. Ppl are cashing in and moving sth as its cheaper to retire. It has been described by commentators as our version of Florida (a much colder version ).
However it might also be called our version of West Virginia. Pay is low and so is the standard of living for locals, great scenery though. The only teaching hospital is losing specialists at the rate of one a month. They predict it will close soon.
Now when ppl retire what is their main concern, after the first long o/s trip. Their health. Declinging health services in our retirment state, not a happy scenario.
Interesting how it will go.

they will import medical staff, from mainland, no big deal. You make it sound like there will be no doctor down there.[biggrin] Sure there will be a shortage of medical staff but Tas will not be the only area short of them.
The most recent report i read on population shift in Australia (before i left the country) was back in Dec. Then a suprise had occured and the Tasmanian population was growing contridicting all these very clever people who said the state was about to disappear.

Will have to jump in and defend Tasmania from someone that has lived here for 20 years ( previously lived Sydney,Paris, London.)There are 2 teaching hospitals , one in Hobart, one in Launceston and 2 major hospitals on the NW coast( Burnie, Devonport) and like all regional hospitals are facing increasing difficulty recruiting staff. Having said that after just visiting my mother in the UK who was in Hospital there give me Tasmania any day[baaa]

Let me explain it for you.
The opportinuties for a specialist to earn from a hospital is based on clientel. A specialist is primarily not paid by the hospital he uses their facilities and they allow him to run his clients through that hospital.
In return he teaches. Any income he earns from this by specialist standards is peanuts.
His income is primarily built from his own practice not some salary from the hospital.Opportunities in Tassie are about Zip.
Now consider if you will. You earn 1 Mill a year plus, where would you live.
Lower Nth shore east Suburbs of Sydney or the booming state of TasmaniaHi Gmh 454
Would you rather earn $1mil per year in Sydney and have a mortgage on a $5mil waterfront property
or $400,000 a year in Hobart and live in a Waterfront property of the same standard for $1mil? It comes down to preferences wether you want to sit on the harbour bridge in traffic jams
or complaining that you were caught at the traffic lights and it took 7 minutes instead of 5 to get to work.We all make are choices.[cap]

your points are valid and it will not only be Tas that has problems that will need to be addressed there is/will be a shortages in all regional areas also. The visiting expert will be the way of the future i guess.

If a specialist has a mortgage on his $5 M waterffront by the time he is 35 he should have a damm good look at himself and see where he is going wrong.

don’t forget a lot of people choose to live outside of Melbourne and Sydney.
People are choosing to live in Tassy, a good friend of mine has just moved from Melbourne to Hobart and he loves the place. He is a professional but sick of melbourne (big city life), he enjoys being 5 minutes from work and now has time to enjoy his young children.
If you want to look at future concerns, Tas and its small health issue is nothing compare to Adelaide’s need for clean drinking water.

Rosebery, Tasmania remains one of the last remaining areas to buy Positive CF
Most of the specialists I know of do very well in Tas. The shift of specialists is similar to the shift of many skilled workers from country areas to big cities. There is a distinct lack of competition for specialists in Tas and consequently they make very good money.

If they are doing well, why did the specialists at the teaching hospital call a crisis meeting ??
