when trying to retile a bathroom and kitchen, do we need to take off the old tiles? or just whack it on top of the old layer?
what about wall paper, can we just take it out and paint it?
DOes anyone know a good handyman in Melbourne?

Hi Fullout,
In a word, yes, you can tile directly over existing tiles. But before you decide to go this route, consider how the extra thickness will affect existing surfaces.Consider wether or not you will be happy to see the additional thickess around the edges.Check how it will finish against shower screens etc.Shower bases have a rebate along the top edge that allows the tile to finish flush with the vertical edge of the base, and adding an extra 7 or 8 mm will give a poor finish around the bottom.Existing tap handles may not be suitable for the extra thickness and you may need to replace with extended spindles.Check there is enough thread on bath spouts and shower roses too,or these may need to be extended if they are at their max now. When dealing with floors, consider how you will neatly finish around toilet pans and pedestal basins.Doors may need to be cut down too.At the end of the day,you won’t get as good a finish as if you start with a new substrate. But if you do decide to do it,ensure the existing tiles are all soundly fixed, and make sure you tell them at the tile shop what you are doing,as not all adhesives are suitable.

Fullout,
I normally paint bathroom tile walls (re-tile the floor) if they are in good condition. I think the brand i use is Johnson (don’t quote me). You’ll need to purchase the base paint as well. It’s more expensive than normal paint, takes longer to apply (3 coats) but works very well.

Hi Fullout,
Another thing to, too remember, if you are claiming depreciation, on furniture and fixtures, make sure you right off the rest of the claim, when replacing the tiles.(This also applies to everything that is going to be fully replaced, dont just replace it, but right it off and claim it all)
In so doing this, you can save more dollars and recieve in more after tax dollars too.
cheers
s.i.sHi Fullout
Good to see you are doing a reno, hope all is going well with your investing plans.
Remember that house in Langford St that we both put offers on, well we painted onver the wall paper in the hall way because it had a lovely rose pattern through it so when we painted it white our walls have a pretty effect.
Be careful to not wash then to much before painting as you can cause some paper to come off.
BTW, we have tenanted that house at $130pw, not bad huh!
Cheers & Good luck
